Tobey Maguire Files for Joint Custody of Son 9 Years After Split From Wife

Tobey Maguire has filed for joint custody of his son, Otis, nearly a decade after splitting from estranged wife Jennifer Meyer.

According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly on Friday, August 1, Maguire, 50, filed a response on Thursday, July 31, to Meyer’s initial divorce filing from 2020. In the docs, Maguire requested joint legal and physical custody of his now 15-year-old son. (The exes are also parents to 18-year-old daughter Ruby.)

The actor also asked for child and spousal support “to be determined through private mediation.”

Maguire and Meyer, 48, met in 2003 and tied the knot in Hawaii four years later. In October 2016, the pair announced that they had decided to separate after nine years of marriage.

“After much soul searching and consideration we have made the decision to separate as a couple,” they said in a statement to Us at the time. “As devoted parents, our first priority remains raising our children together with enduring love, respect and friendship.”

Two years after their split, Meyer discussed how she and Maguire navigate their dynamic after their breakup.

“He’s my best friend,” she exclusively told Us in January 2018. “He’s the greatest ex-husband a girl could ever have.”

The jewelry designer added that her and Maguire’s priority was coparenting their children.

“The day begins with the kids and ends with the kids,” she explained. “So you manage to get your time in and work hard in the middle, you know? They’re really amazing kids, so we figure it out together. It just manages to work out really well.”

In November 2020, Us confirmed that Meyer officially filed for divorce from Maguire four years after they called it quits. Two years later, Meyer opened up about how she still had a soft spot for her estranged husband post-split.

“I can’t even explain. I would literally do anything in the world for Tobey. He is my brother. I love him to death and we have the most beautiful family,” she said on an episode of “The World’s First Podcast” in 2022.

Last year, Meyer revealed that she was engaged to Geoffrey Ogunlesi, who is the son of Nigerian billionaire Adebayo Ogunlesi.

“YES!!! ♥️♾️✨,” she wrote via Instagram in September 2024 alongside photos of her Geoffrey.

Maguire, for his part, was last linked to model Lily Chee.

Earlier this year, Maguire and Meyer reunited to celebrate Ruby’s high school graduation.

“Congratulations Ruby!!!!! ♥️ Graduate of our dreams,” Meyer wrote via Instagram in May alongside a series of snaps from Ruby’s milestone. “We are so proud of you in every way. We love love love love love you baby 🥰♥️.”
