Palm Cultivation: Farming that can make crorepati; income for 30 years with one-time plantation

Are you a farmer from Chhattisgarh or looking for new earning opportunities? Palm cultivation could be your path to a sustainable source of income. The government is promoting palm and other horticultural crops to provide farmers with additional income streams.

Considering the rising demand and productivity of palm oil, both the central and state governments are encouraging farmers to adopt palm cultivation under the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm.

So far, more than 2,682 hectares of land in the state have been planted with oil palm saplings.

How the government is supporting farmers with Rs 1 lakh each

According to the Chhattisgarh Agriculture Department, both the central and state governments are offering ₹1 lakh each as grants to encourage palm cultivation. Farmers also receive free training in modern farming techniques.

Expansion across the nation

Under the National Oilseed and Oil Palm Mission, the government aims to reduce the country’s dependency on imported edible oils and increase farmers’ incomes. To date, 3.5 lakh hectares of land across India have been planted with palm.

The Ministry of Agriculture reports a 15% increase in domestic palm oil production in 2024–25, with a target of reaching 2.8 million tonnes by 2029–30.

Government have focus on these states, regions

The Centre is promoting palm cultivation in Telangana, Assam, Mizoram, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, especially in tribal-dominated regions like Bastar and Dantewada.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai and guidance of Agriculture Minister Ramvichar Netam, palm cultivation is being encouraged in 17 districts including Bastar, Kondagaon, Kanker, Sukma, Narayanpur, Bijapur, Dantewada, Mahasamund, Raigarh, Sarangarh-Bilaigarh, Janjgir-Champa, Durg, Bemetara, Jashpur, Surguja, Korba, and Bilaspur.

In the last four years, 1,150 farmers have planted palms over 1,600 hectares. In 2025 alone, 802 farmers have planted palms over 1,089 hectares.

Investment, subsidies, returns details

  • Free saplings: 143 per hectare (worth Rs 29,000)
  • Total cost: Rs 3.9–4 lakh per hectare (including fencing, irrigation, maintenance, and intercrops)
  • Grants: Rs 1 lakh from the Centre + Rs 1 lakh from the state government
  • Loan facility: Available for remaining expenses
  • Maintenance subsidy: Provided for drip irrigation, borewells, pumps, compost units, harvesting tools, and tractors
