Sarah Michelle Gellar didn’t hold onto all of her clothing archives, but her daughter sure is happy that one special item made the cut.
Gellar, 48, exclusively opened up to Us Weekly about her personal vintage collection while promoting eBay’s ’95 Shop, which launched on Wednesday, September 3.
The actress, who curated the shop of fashion items and collectibles, admitted to Us that she had a hard time deciding what was going to be featured, but knew the Fendi baguette bag had to be a part of it.
“‘Sex and the City’ was everything to me,” Gellar explained. “And I remember Carrie Bradshaw [played by Sarah Jessica Parker] carrying a [Fendi baguette] bag and I was like, ‘I want one.’”
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star added, “And I remember going, ‘You know what, I’m going to get one.’ And I went to Fendi and I bought myself a Fendi baguette and it was such a moment for me that I was carrying the same bag as Carrie Bradshaw.”
Like mother, like daughter, as her 15-year-old, Charlotte, also has an eye for the bag now. “It’s one of the few things my daughter always wants to grab from my closet,” she told Us, noting that she didn’t keep many of her “stuff from the ’90s,” besides her beloved baguette.
Gellar, who shares daughter Charlotte and son Rocky, 12, with husband Freddie Prinze Jr., also shared that she and her daughter “most of the time” have “incredibly” different styles. “The [’90s] stuff that I have is really the only part of my closet that she wants.”
Another item that Charlotte was hoping her mom still had was chokers, but Gellar had said goodbye to that style of jewelry long ago. “She came in one day, she’s like, ‘Mom, I need a choker. You must have chokers. You wore them in the ’90s,’” Gellar recalled to Us. “I was like, ‘Yes, that was in the ’90s. I don’t have any chokers now.”
Gellar also doesn’t see herself returning to chokers — even if her daughter is persisting that they’re back in style. “I always feel like it just sort of makes your neck look shorter,” she told Us.
While she’s parted ways with the fad, Gellar was more than happy that slip dresses came back into fashion. “I love slip dresses,” she told Us, noting she styled them with “a T-shirt” and “a sweater.”
“I don’t know why those ever went out,” Gellar said. “To me, it’s the easiest thing to put on and feel put together and be comfortable. So I’m all here for the slip dresses.”
