‘Serendipity’ Cast: Where Are They Now?

Is it meant to be? In 2001, romantic comedy fans followed the would-or-wouldn’t-they romance of Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack's lovestruck characters in Serendipity.

In the classic film, the actors played Jonathan Trager and Sara Thomas, who ended up searching for one another over several years in New York City after they first met, fell in love and went their separate ways. Despite a heartbreaking parting, the pair remained convinced that their initial encounter was fated.

“As is often the case, there was a sort of central problem with the female character not necessarily being totally believable. So we had a lot of meetings about it: I didn’t want this character to be this kind of wispy fool, even though she was so interested in fate,” Beckinsale recalled of her acting process during an April 2020 interview with Vulture. “You can be like that without being this sort of ghastly supernatural person. … She’s a therapist. You don’t want her to be a bad, embarrassing therapist, but she’s also obsessed with the notion of serendipity and fate. So trying to marry those two things without making her a character who seems completely implausible. You can be a kind of whimsical, positive, open person who’s also intelligent.”

The Say Anything star portrayed Jonathan Trager. He has also notably appeared in Sixteen Candles, Stand By Me, True Colors, Bullets Over Broadway, Cradle Will Rock, High Fidelity, America’s Sweethearts, 2012, The Paperboy, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Blood Money and Utopia.

The Illinois native, whose sister is actress Joan Cusack, has previously been linked to Minnie Driver, Britney Spears and Neve Campbell throughout his lengthy Hollywood career.

Beckinsale played the film’s leading lady, Sara Thomas. She has since starred in film and TV projects, including Much Ado About Nothing, Pearl Harbor, Laurel Canyon, Underworld, Van Helsing, The Aviator, Love & Friendship, The Only Living Boy in New York, The Widow and Guilty Party.

The London native previously dated Michael Sheen from 1992 to 2002 — with whom she shares daughter Lily — before romancing Pete Davidson in 2019. Beckinsale was married to director Len Wiseman for 11 years ahead of their November 2015 split.

Piven played Dean Kansky, Jonathan’s close pal. The Entourage alum also appeared in Say Anything, Judgment Night, Music From Another Room, The Larry Sanders Show, Ellen, Old School, Chasing Liberty, Keeping Up with the Steins, Spy Kids 4-D: All the Time in the World and American Night.

The Emmy winner has been linked to Kelly Brook, model Sophie Turner, January Jones, Dita Von Teese and Vanessa Marcil.

The New York native played Jonathan’s fiancée, Halley Buchanan, in the film. Moynahan was then featured in Coyote Ugly, Sex and the City, The Recruit, Six Degrees, Ramona and Beezus, John Wick and Blue Bloods. She also reprises her role as Big’s ex-wife, Natasha, in the Sex and the City revival, And Just Like That, in December 2021 on HBO Max.

Moynahan dated NFL star Tom Brady, with whom she shares son Jack, for three years ahead of their December 2006 split. She wed businessman Andrew Frankel in October 2015.

Levy had a small role as a Bloomingdale’s salesman in the production. The Schitt’s Creek cocreator’s other acting credits include Double Negative, SCTV, Splash, Father of the Bride, The Secret Life of Girls, American Pie, Bringing Down the House, New York Minute, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, Madea’s Witness Protection, Finding Dory, and Star-Crossed: The Film.

The Canada native wed Deborah Divine in 1977 before welcoming son Dan Levy and daughter Sarah Levy. Eugene costarred with both of his children on the Pop TV series, Schitt’s Creek.

The West Virginia native played Sara’s second love interest. Corbett also appeared in Northern Exposure, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Sex and the City, Raising Helen, Raise Your Voice, The Messengers, United States of Tara, Parenthood, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged and Rebel.

The And Just Like That actor secretly wed Bo Derek in 2020 after nearly 20 years together.

The SNL alum played Sara’s BFF, Eve. She then starred in The Phantom of the Opera, Never Been Kissed, Wet Hot American Summer, American Splendor, The Music Man, My Boss’s Daughter, Marie Antoinette, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Kath & Kim, Promising Young Woman and The Other Two.

The Ohio native has been married to Fritz Chesnut since 2004, with whom she shares children Stella and Nolan.
