The 2025 Emmy nominations are officially here — and there were more than a few surprises that got the internet talking.
What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillén and Running Point actress Brenda Song took the stage alongside Television Academy chair Cris Abrego on Tuesday, July 14, to announce this year’s nominations.
Severance dominated with 27 nods for its second season, with HBO’s The Penguin following close behind with 24. First-time shows like The Pitt and The Studio pulled some big numbers, while other fan-favorite series, like The Last of Us, racked up various acting nods.
Comedian Nate Bargatze is set to host the ceremony, which will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 14.
Keep scrolling for the biggest surprises from the 2025 Emmy nominations:
1. The ‘White Lotus’ Hits — And Misses
Fans took to social media with disappointment after Patrick Schwarzenegger and Sam Nivola, who played controversial bothers Saxon and Lochlan, weren’t recognized for their work.
The biggest surprise, perhaps, was Sam Rockwell’s nod in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category after appearing in only four episodes. Turns out, that wild monologue — if you know, you know — was worth it. (Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell, Aimee Lou Wood, Walton Goggins and Jason Isaacs also snagged nominations for their work.)
2. How Long Ago Was ‘Presumed Innocent’
Jake Gyllenhaal received a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category for his role as Rusty Sabich in the June 2024 Apple TV+ show. Surprising to many TV aficionados, mainly because the show aired, literally, one year ago.

3. The Meghann Fahy Recognition
After taking on several roles in shows about rich people who spend extended time on remote islands, the actress finally got her nomination. Fahy nabbed an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role as Devon DeWitt in Sirens.
4. No ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Love
The show has been widely recognized in Emmys past, but Selena Gomez didn’t get nominated for her role as Mabel on the Hulu series this year. Her costar Steve Martin wasn’t up for anything either. The show did get a nod in the Outstanding Comedy Series category, but the only acting nomination went to Martin Short for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
5. ‘The Bear’ Is Still a Comedy
Despite what the internet says, this wasn’t going to change this year. The Bear still racked up all those comedy nominations — but it’s important to note that the nods are for 2024’s season 3 and not the recently released fourth season.
