"The truth is that after that first meeting, I met with [director Tony Scott], [producer] Jerry [Bruckheimer] and Paramount Pictures," he recalled during a 2016 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! "I got in the car and I was flying to New York. I told my agent, 'I'm going to make this movie, but don't tell Jerry I want to make this movie because I want to fly with the Blue Angels.' You've got to work these things, you know? I'm a businessman."

He later defended his rant in May 2021. “I said what I said,” he told Empire magazine, adding that he was only addressing “select people” who were violating safety measures. “There was a lot at stake at that point.”
