Michmir Investments, which operates in South Africa through Amic Trading, is the owner of the Toys R Us and Babies R Us brands through a global licence.
According to Phumla Mnganga, chair of Toys R Us South Africa, the employees of 94 ToyZone outlets will be retained and integrated into the Toys R Us “family” as part of the transaction.
“We are pleased to welcome our colleagues from Toy Zone into our company,” she says, adding that each ToyZone store will be converted into a dual Toys R Us and Babies R Us outlet.
She believes the retention of ToyZone’s experienced team ensures continuity of service, while the added scale allows the group to better stock the right products.
Market size
Toys R Us’s analysis shows the South African toys market was worth approximately R9 trillion in 2024, and is projected to reach around R15.8 trillion by 2033.
The e-commerce segment of the local toys market generated roughly R1.2 billion in online sales last year, reflecting “rapid consumer adoption,” the group notes.
The 0 to 8 year demographic remains dominant, with infant and toddler and doll segments projected to represent over 30 % of total market value through 2027.
