The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s final season surprised fans due to the handful of cheating story lines — some of which weren’t even in Jenny Han‘s book series.
Prime Video’s hit series, which debuted in June 2022, is based on a book series of the same name by showrunner Han. The Summer I Turned Pretty focuses on Belly (Lola Tung) who gets caught up in a love triangle where, after exploring her feelings for Conrad (Christopher Briney), she starts to reconsider whether his brother, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), is her perfect match.
In the original book trilogy, Belly made her final choice in We’ll Always Have Summer, which will presumably inspire the third season of the show. But Han and the cast started to worry viewers when they hinted at some shakeups on screen. It all made more sense when season 3 premiered in July 2025 with a few more cheating story lines than Han’s books originally introduced.
Prime Video previously released a statement providing “community guidelines” for fans to follow ahead of possible backlash.
“Cousins is our safe place. Everything good, everything magical. Let’s keep the conversation kind this summer,” read the July 2025 post. “We have a ZERO tolerance policy for bullying and hate speech. If you engage in any of the following, you will be banned.”
The statement asked that fans not engage in “hate speech or bullying, targeting our cast or crew and harassing or doxxing members of the community.” This came after Tung had a message for viewers who were taking fictional shipping too far.
“When people have an attachment to the characters, they want to see it come together at the end,” she told Teen Vogue that same month. “I’m so grateful that they care so much, but people get a little scary about it.”
Tung continued: “Please don’t threaten to kill someone if something doesn’t go your way — I promise you, it’s not that serious. Jenny [Han] is so smart and she cares so much about the story and making it the best story that it can be. It will be OK.”

Jeremiah Fisher
Despite hints from Han and the cast about book to screen changes, the only shift when it came to Jeremiah cheating on Belly on spring break with Lacie Barone (Lily Donoghue) is the fact that it happened twice.
Steven Conklin
A three-year time jump reintroduced Us to Steven after his breakup with Taylor. He has now graduated college, is dating a girl named Mia, who the audience has yet to meet and he’s secretly still hooking up with Taylor.
Taylor Jewel
Speaking of infidelity, Taylor is going strong with Davis when season 3 begins — except he doesn’t know she’s also sleeping with Steven. The arrangement, which appeared to mean much more to both Taylor and Steven, came to an end after he woke up from his coma following a car crash.
