Why Lola Tung and Nicholas Chavez Were Cut From 'I Know What You Did Last Summer'

Lola Tung and Nicholas Alexander Chavez will not appear in the new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie.

While newcomers Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King, lead the sequel cast, both Tung and Chavez were set to appear in a smaller role.

The movie, a new installment of the 1997 movie of the same name, follows a group of high school students who cause a fatal car wreck and are sworn to secrecy about their involvement. One year later, they’re haunted by the accident.

Fans started to speculate that something went down behind-the-scenes with Tung and Chavez when both stars were missing from the film’s promotional tour. Early viewings of the movie — set to hit theaters on Friday, July 18 ­— also revealed that they weren’t in the film.

“It happens. You shoot something and, when you watch the scene, it doesn’t fit in the film,” director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson told Variety before I Know What You Did Last Summer hit theaters.

It was initially reported in November 2024 that Tung and Chavez were set to appear in the sequel, but details about their characters were kept under wraps at the time.

It appears the two weren’t cast in major roles, as director Robinson told Variety that they shot a “fantastic” scene — that ultimately didn’t make it in.

Robinson explained in multiple interviews that it wasn’t a personal decision by any means.

“It didn’t work within the film that we were creating. And when you’re trying to make something that’s bold, sometimes that happens,” she told Variety. “But they are so fantastic, so it was definitely a hard choice.”

The director shared a similar sentiment with People.

“It was just one of those situations where it had nothing to do with Lola and Nicholas — they are both so fantastic. I really would love to work with them again. I loved working with them. They did a fabulous job,” Robinson said. “But in the larger tapestry of the film, it just didn’t fit.”

Neither star has spoken publicly about getting cut from the film just yet.

“Everybody was so professional about it. They’re so sweet, so lovely. They totally got it,” Robinson explained to Variety. “Maybe they’ll make the sequel.”
