Dax Shepard will never speak negatively about his marriage to Kristen Bell, even if they split at some point in the future.
Shepard, 50, made the declaration during a conversation with Alicia Silverstone about her 20-year marriage to her ex-husband, Chris Jarecki, on the Monday, September 8, episode of Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast.
“I say this all the time, like, if Kristen and I ever split up, I would only describe this as still an enormously successful relationship,” Shepard told Silverstone, 48, and cohost Monica Padman. “Like, we loved each other to death. We had these two beautiful children. We had this great time together.”
The Zathura actor added that he felt like he would be “dishonoring” his marriage by not considering their wonderful times together.
Shepard and Bell, 45, tied the knot in October 2013 after six years of dating. They welcomed daughter Lincoln, 12, in March 2013, followed by daughter Delta, 10, in December 2014.
Though Shepard and Bell’s marriage has been successful, it’s not without its challenges. The couple opened up about their opposite personalities and how it has caused struggles in their relationship during a 2019 cover story for People.
“We definitely had to work really hard at being a couple because we’re both incredibly, painfully stubborn, and we’re pretty much opposites,” Shepard said. “I was like, ‘That’s the best personality I’ve ever seen on a woman. I need to be around it. I want to be around it when I’m 80, but how?’”
Bell echoed his sentiments in a 2024 interview with E!.
“I married my polar opposite,” the Veronica Mars actress shared. “We are the antithesis of each other. We argue about absolutely everything, but there is a foundational trust that we’ve built that keeps us together and is quite stimulated by one another’s opinions.”
Bell added that “being with someone who you are unlike or you don’t have a ton of similarities with, it forces you to grow.”
As for Silverstone, she was married to Jarecki, 48, from 2005 to 2018. (They began dating in 1997.) The former couple welcomed son Bear, now 14, in May 2011.
Despite their split, Silverstone said on “Armchair Expert” that she doesn’t like to call Jarecki her “ex-husband.”
“It sounds so horrible. The man that I was married to for 20 years,” she said, later declaring that she would “always love him so much.”
“He lives across the street from me, by the way,” Silverstone added. “He used to live down the street, but now he lives across the street. I will always love him.”
Silverstone also admitted that her dog often wants to visit Jarecki’s house on walks, and when Jarecki opens the door in his underwear, she starts “noticing all the things” about him that she was attracted to during their marriage.
“I’m sure we’re both still attracted to each other,” she continued. “We love each other. And that was my partner for 20-something years.”
Though Silverstone said it was “heartbreaking” to split from Jarecki, it was the right thing to do, and they now “coparent beautifully.”
“I’m really lucky that we have such a good … we’re so good at coparenting with each other,” Silverstone exclusively gushed to Us Weekly in November 2018. “We both see [our son] Bear, unless I’m away shooting something where he can’t be there, but he usually comes with me anyway.”
She added, “There’s no way to tell anybody how to make their relationship work or their thing work. It just works for us. We both love our son, right? We both want to be with our son and we both love each other too.”
