The Conjuring franchise is coming to an end after four films — but not before going out with a major bang.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Conjuring: Last Rites.
The final installment of the series, titled The Conjuring: Last Rites, premiered in theaters on Friday, September 5, and follows married couple Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) in the 1980’s for one final exorcism that turns out to be their most personal yet. The couple and their daughter, Judy (Mia Tomlinson), head to Pennsylvania to face a demon from their very first case — and one that they’ve been running from for decades.
“You have to disconnect when you do these movies,” Wilson exclusively told USA Today earlier this month, particularly when “a scene is really terrible, violent or dealing with evil and the devil. It’s very heavy and dark and we go there as actors. And when things spill over into your own life, it does get a little messy.”
The Conjuring universe began in 2013 with Wilson and Farmiga in the lead roles based on the real life couple of the same name. The flagship movie went on to spawn three sequels with the duo reprising their roles as the iconic paranormal investigators, but the universe has 10 films in total that include spinoffs like 2014’s Annabelle and 2018’s The Nun. Last Rites will be the final movie featuring Ed and Lorraine’s adventures.
Farmiga told USA Today that Wilson became her “security blanket” while filming the paranormal horror movies. But while she said she would “love” to see them married again in a different project, Wilson was more hesitant, telling her, “The purity of the love of our Ed and Lorraine is very specific to these characters. It would be very difficult to play opposite you and have to fight with you or something. It would be terrible. I don’t want to do that.”

Is There a Post-Credits Scene in ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’?
Yes — kind of! It isn’t exactly a Marvel-style tease, but after the movie ends, photos and video footage of the real life Warrens pop up alongside the main cast and credits. After the screen goes black, the full credits roll until the very end when another real life picture of Ed Warren with the mirror from Last Rites in the background.
Text then appears on screen that explains the mirror still remains in the museum in Ed and Lorraine’s house and it is referred to as “a conjure mirror,” explaining where the title of the franchise originated from.
What Is ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ About?
Set in 1986, the film is inspired by the real-life Smurl mystery and follows Ed and Lorraine Warren as they set out to solve one last paranormal mystery. The couple travel to Pennsylvania where a mysterious entity has taken over a home that eight people claimed to have experienced. Upon investigating, the duo quickly realize that the demon haunting the home is the first one they ever encountered — and ran away from years prior.
How Does ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ End?
The movie begins with a throwback of Ed and Lorraine’s first case that involved a mirror with a wooden frame containing three cherubs. The couple discover the mirror is being inhabited by a demon, which attacks a pregnant Lorraine, causing her to be rushed to the hospital with early labor. Although Lorraine delivers their daughter, Judy, she arrives with the umbilical cord around her neck and not breathing. Luckily, Judy survives and the family runs from the demon.
Back in 1986, Ed and Lorraine are retired, but a priest in Pennsylvania meets the Smurl family who are dealing with a particularly nasty evil spirit in their home. Feeling bad for them, he plans to reach out to Ed and Lorraine but dies before he can convince them to help. Meanwhile, a now-adult Judy — who is clairvoyant like her mother — gets a vision of the priest’s death and heads to Pennsylvania for answers. Realizing where Judy has gone after Lorraine gets a vision about something being wrong, she and Ed go to find their daughter and meet the Smurls at their home.
Although the couple are hesitant to take on the Smurl’s case, Judy convinces them. They try to find out the root of the haunting, which started when one of the Smurls’ daughters was gifted the wood-framed mirror. After realizing the mirror was behind the strange happenings in their home, the Smurls trashed it. Except when Lorraine and Judy go into the attic one day, the mirror is there — and it’s the same mirror that haunted Ed and Lorraine years prior.
Ed and Lorraine quickly realize the demon is trying to get its revenge on them after they escaped years earlier. Judy ends up getting possessed by the demon, hanging herself in the attic but is ultimately saved by CPR. Angering the demon even further, it continues to push harder as Ed tries to exorcise the spirit with bible verses.
Ed is ultimately successful, freeing the Smurls — and Ed, Lorraine and Judy — from the demon. The film ends with Judy and her fiancé Tony’s wedding. Ed walks Judy down the aisle and Ed and Lorraine share a sweet dance at the reception, where Lorraine reveals she had a vision of their future and it involves grandchildren, writing a book and living happily ever after.
Does ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Set Up for a Sequel?
Last Rites serves as the fourth film in The Conjuring flagship series, as well as the 10th film in the overall universe, which includes spinoffs like The Nun and Annabelle. It is meant to serve as the final film for Ed and Lorraine Warren, although other spinoffs could potentially continue.
