9-1-1 said goodbye to Peter Krause’s Captain Bobby Nash during season 8 — but the cast — and viewers — have not fully moved on.

“We had a very big emotional thing on the show, losing Peter and Bobby Nash, and I know that a lot of the audience took that very personal,” Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays 9-1-1 operator Maddie Han, exclusively told Us Weekly on Friday, September 5, while attending the ABC Summer Soirée. “We did too, and I want the audience to know that.”

The actress, 46, revealed, “As a cast and as a show, we took it as seriously as they took it,” noting, “We miss him dearly.”

Hewitt teased that season 9 will continue to remember the character and the actor following his April exit. “He will be honored in this season in more ways than one,” she shared. “So he is there in spirit. He’s in our hearts.”

Hewitt noted, “It’s just a show, and nine seasons in, you have to do things, right? You have to shake things up and you have to tell stories and you have to do those things. But we miss him too.”

During season 8, ABC surprised fans by killing off Bobby (Krause) after seven years. The L.A. fire captain waited until after firefighter Chimney (Kenneth Choi) received the antidote for a deadly virus before telling his wife, Athena Grant (Angela Bassett), that he was also infected and was going to die.

Before the season’s end, viewers watched Bobby’s funeral and saw how the firehouse had begun to move forward following the loss of their leader. However, according to the cast, that was just the start of their grieving process.

“This season is definitely a pivotal moment in both of our lives and especially concerning the dynamic of our family, especially considering the loss of Bobby, Peter Krause,” Corinne Massiah, who plays Athena’s daughter and Bobby’s stepdaughter, May Grant, exclusively told Us on Friday about what to expect next season.

She teased, “I think you’re going to see a lot of people grow together and then grow apart. That’s just how grieving works. Everyone grieves differently and I really appreciate how you kind of see all stages of grief among the cast. So I’m excited to see how we grow through it.”

Elijah M. Cooper, who plays May’s TV brother, Harry Grant, told Us that their lives will be impacted differently than the firefighters that Bobby left behind.

“There is also a large amount of both of our characters transitioning out of being teenagers into being young adults. And so we’re trying to find ourselves,” Cooper explained. “Find what our ambitions and our wants are and what our needs are in a lot of ways. I think we explore that deeply through our family dynamic.”

Massiah, 22, added, “There’s a lot of soul-searching, and then there’s a lot of trying to find our own purposes and our own places in the world.”

When it comes to filming without Krause, 60, both actors told Us it hasn’t been easy.

“He was obviously such a ball of energy, so kind. But I mean, we’re just so lucky to have worked with him when we did,” Massiah shared. “I mean, he’s literally a father figure, such a kind person. So patient, so kind and yeah, we wish him nothing but the best. Amazing person.”

Cooper, who began playing an older version of Harry during season 7, recalled feeling “so invited” and like “part of the family” from the moment he met Krause.

“We love him very much. Even though it’s tough, we’re definitely finding a way to move forward through the season and we’re going to have a lot of good that happens,” he concluded.

Season 9 of 9-1-1 premieres on ABC Thursday, October 9, at 8 p.m. ET.
