How Does Iain Stirling Balance Narrating the 'Love Island' UK and USA?

5 days ago 1

As if watching Love Island USA six days a week wasn’t grueling enough, can you imagine being narrator Iain Stirling, who has to keep up with the UK version as well?

Stirling, 37, broke down his summer schedule, which consists of watching footage from both Love Island USA and Love Island UK in order to offer his commentary in voiceover form.

“It’s pretty full-on,” he told People on Tuesday, July 1. “I do the UK one [from] 12:00 till about 5:00, roughly speaking, but there might be changes after that.”

Stirling, who shares 4-year-old daughter Stevie with wife Laura Whitmore, then prioritizes “dad duties” before returning to his tough work schedule. (Whitmore used to be a presenter on Love Island.)

“So it’s like bath time, dinner time, bedtime. That’s until 7:30, and then I have dinner,” he noted. Stirling explained that he starts narrating the USA version at 8:30 p.m and that will take until 2:30 a.m. “This is all U.K. time.”

Stirling continued: “At 2:30, I log off and I go to bed and then whenever my little one wakes up, I get up. We start quite early for the US one. So the UK one, we get the show, but it’s, like, the final edited show. We just do our jokes, it’s fine.”

According to the comedian, it has helped having Love Island USA footage sent to him while it is “still getting edited and changed.” He also pointed out the major time difference between where he lives in the U.K. and the villa in Fiji where Love Island USA is filmed.

“We have to start early [on USA], otherwise I’d be up till 7:30 in the morning and I would literally never sleep,” he continued while praising the “great team” that has helped him. Stirling named his cowriter Mark on Love Island UK who is “great and he’s been doing it for 10 years.”

As for Love Island USA, Stirling will write his narrations with “an amazing New York comic called Caroline Hanes and then a British comic called Steve Bugeja.”

“I’ve got a team around me, which is great because, the first couple of weeks, everyone just has to tell me who everyone’s names are, because I’ve got two shows worth of people in my head,” he shared. “All the girls are very similar [on Love Island], so it’s really hard to tell the girls apart [while] the American guys and the UK guys have different vibes.”

Stirling has been the narrator for Love Island UK since its premiere in 2015. He joined Love Island USA in 2022 and quickly became a fan-favorite presence as viewers tune in daily — except Wednesday — over the summer to watch single people fall in love while locked away in a luxury villa in Fiji.

Stirling recently made headlines when he addressed the overwhelming reactions — both positive and negative — to season 7 of Love Island USA.

“Lots of you are saying lots of nice things about Love Island this year. I do really appreciate it. But there’s just one little thing I would like to clear up,” he said in a June TikTok while clarifying he has “absolutely no control” over what happens in the villa. “If they asked me to say it, I will say it. So please stop messaging me and asking me. I can’t. I wish I could help you out, but I can’t.”

New episodes of Love Island USA are released six days a week — except for Wednesdays — on Peacock.
