Hulu‘s lineup of shows tends to be dominated by network programming, FX comedies and dramas, in addition to streaming originals.

Sometimes, a surprising show slips through the cracks and turns out to be something special.

Obituary is a dark comedy produced in Ireland that lives up to that description. Even with its recent season 2 premiere, Obituary is still flying under the radar.

That’s why Watch With Us has picked Obituary as the one Hulu show in October that you need to stream now. Especially if you like macabre humor.

Elvira Is a Cross Between Wednesday Addams and Dexter

Siobhán Cullen stars in the show as Elvira Clancy, the obituary writer for the local newspaper in her small town. Unfortunately for Elvira, the townspeople just aren’t dying quickly enough for her to earn a living. So she decided to help some of them to an early grave so she can keep making money by writing about them.

Cullen probably could have been a great Wednesday Addams when she was younger, because there are aspects of Elvira’s personality that reflect the more famous character, especially her demeanor. And yet she’s also a less altruistic version of Dexter Morgan from Dexter. Elvira even adopts her own code about who to kill and how to stage their deaths, very much like Dexter himself. On a more serious show, Elvira would be the villain. Yet here she’s the anti-hero we can’t help but love. She’s too amusing to hate.

The Show’s Dark Humor Is Very Funny

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of clips of the show on YouTube to illustrate Obituary‘s dark sense of humor. That’s the downside of having such a low profile on Hulu. That may change if people discover just how funny this show really is. This isn’t a broad comedy, and its style is best described as dry. But it still finds laughs in the bleakest of circumstances.

Cullen has a very deft touch for comedy herself, as she relates Elvira’s intentions and emotions through offhand remarks and facial expressions. Sometimes, the people around Elvira even assume that she’s simply joking when she says something wildly inappropriate. Elvira doesn’t always do a very good job of hiding her true nature, but most of her coworkers are too blind to see it. She’s also quite obvious when it comes to her affection for the paper’s new crime writer, Emerson Stafford (Ronan Raftery), and she can’t ever share the truth with him about her extracurricular activities, even if he does return her feelings.

Season 2 Raises the Stakes — and it’s Even Better

There are only six episodes in Obituary season 1, and it’s probably best if we don’t spoil all of the details. What you need to know for season 2 is that Elvira’s corner of the world is unraveling. Someone close to her is dead, and she’s the prime suspect in a murder that she didn’t even commit.

That may seem terribly unfair for Elvira, until you remember that she’s racked up quite a kill count of her own. Now, another serial killer is lurking about, and this town may not be big enough for the both of them. There’s currently no word on whether Obituary will be back for season 3, but the way season 2 ends should be enough closure if it’s the end of the story.

Obituary is streaming on Hulu.
