Prince Andrew is making headlines for his connection to Jeffrey Epstein once again, but where does the former Duke of York stand with the royal family?
In 2019, the late Virginia Giuffre accused Andrew of sexual assault. At the time, she claimed to have had a sexual encounter with the prince when she was 17 in 2001 at one of Epstein’s properties. Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell allegedly orchestrated it.
Andrew has vehemently denied Giuffre’s allegations against him. He even went on BBC’s Newsnight for an interview in 2019 and claimed that he had “no recollection of ever meeting this lady” despite there being a photo of him and Giuffre together alongside Maxwell. (Giuffre, who died by suicide at age 41 in April 2025, sued Andrew for sexual abuse in 2021, and they settled for an undisclosed sum.)
Following the interview, Andrew announced his plan to “step back from public duties” within the royal family.
“It has become clear to me over the last few days that the circumstance relating to my former association with Jeffrey Epstein has become a major disruption to my family’s work and the valuable work going on in the many organizations and charities that I am proud to support,” he shared in a November 2019 statement.
Nearly six years later, Andrew announced in October 2025 that he would be giving up his royal title.

Is Prince Andrew a Working Member of the Royal Family?
No, Andrew officially stepped away from his public duties after his 2019 scandal with Epstein broke.
The former duke acknowledged his “ill-judged association” with Epstein in a statement at the time. (Epstein died by suicide at age 66 in New York’s Metropolitan Correctional Center in August 2019, one month after he was arrested on federal charges of sex trafficking minors.)
“His suicide has left many unanswered questions, particularly for his victims, and I deeply sympathize with everyone who has been affected and wants some form of closure,” Andrew’s statement read. “I can only hope that, in time, they will be able to rebuild their lives. Of course, I am willing to help any appropriate law enforcement agency with their investigations, if required.”
Did Prince Andrew Give Up His Title?
Yes, as of October 2025, he will no longer be the Duke of York.
“In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” Andrew said in a statement to Us Weekly at the time. “I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.”
He added, “With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honors which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”
Where Does Prince Andrew Stand With King Charles III?
Charles has never spoken out about his brother’s scandal regarding Epstein.
Multiple reports in 2025 have revealed that tensions rose between the king and his brother.
The U.K.’s The Times reported before Andrew’s decision to give up his title that Charles was at “a tipping point” with his sibling, especially after emails between the former Duke of York and Epstein from 2011 resurfaced earlier that same month. The report alleged that Charles was “considering all options.”

It was also reported that Charles disinvited Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, from the royal family’s 2025 Christmas celebration.
