If you’ve looked at Netflix‘s most popular movies this week, you may have noticed that three slots are taken up by the first three Shrek films.
KPop Demon Hunters is taking up two slots by itself with the sing-along version. That doesn’t leave us much to work with from the five remaining films on the list.
Since Watch With Us already put the spotlight on The Thursday Murder Club, we left it out of this week’s most popular Netflix movies that you need to watch.
Our picks include a remake of a classic children’s story, a thrilling crime drama and a horror film that’s found new life on Netflix.
‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ (2005)
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory may be the most beloved adaptation of Roald Dahl‘s famous story, but the 2005 take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has its charms as well. Director Tim Burton cast Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, the reclusive candy baron who emerges from seclusion with the offer of a lifetime of chocolate for anyone who finds a golden ticket in their Wonka chocolate bars.
Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) is one of the lucky few to discover a golden ticket, which allows him to tour the chocolate factory with his grandfather, Joe (David Kelly). Once inside, Willy has a way of weeding out the bad boys and girls. But Charlie may just be the kid that Willy is looking for.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is streaming on Netflix.
‘Wind River’ (2019)
Yellowstone cocreator Taylor Sheridan wrote and directed Wind River, which reunites Marvel stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. Renner plays U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tracker agent Cory Lambert, the man who discovers the body of a young native woman, Natalie Hanson (Kelsey Asbille).
FBI agent Jane Banner (Olsen) is set by the bureau to determine if Natalie’s death was a homicide. Cory proves to be a dependable ally for Jane, especially when the two of them encounter resistance. Someone doesn’t want the answers about Natalie’s demise to come out because what happened to her isn’t the only crime that needs to be solved. That’s the kind of secret that some people are willing to kill for.
Wind River is streaming on Netflix.
‘Escape Room’ (2019)
Escape rooms are meant to be group activities that don’t actually put anyone in lethal jeopardy. The gamesmaster apparently didn’t get the memo in Escape Room, as strangers are invited to take part in a special escape room with a $10,000 cash prize. Zoey Davis (Taylor Russell), Ben Miller (Logan Miller), Amanda Harper (Deborah Ann Woll), Mike Nolan (Tyler Labine), Danny Khan (Nik Dodani) and Jason Walker (Jay Ellis) all accepted the offer.
That’s a decision the group soon comes to regret, as even the waiting room is a trap. The only way out of this elaborate pathway of themed escape rooms is by completing them all, even as the group keeps losing members to the gruesome traps.
Escape Room is streaming on Netflix.
