Orlando Bloom got honest about how his body recovered after extreme slimdown for his role in The Cut — and revealed whether he used weight loss drugs.
Bloom, 48, was asked by Craig Melvin during the Friday, September 5, episode of Today if he used Ozempic to lose weight for the film. The question prompted a laugh from Bloom, who denied using any weight loss drugs to aid his dramatic transformation.
“None of that,” he replied. “It was cardio, it was boxing, it was weights and then it was just an insane diet, really, like, for the last three weeks, just tuna and cucumber, that was it.”
The film was shot in reverse chronological order, giving audiences a complete look at Bloom’s body transformation up close. He gave a shout-out to the nutritionist who was brought in to manage his diet, exercise and overall health while working on the film.
“I had a great nutritionist … who helped me, because it’s definitely not something to try at home,” Bloom said. “It was sort of like science, actually, really, because we shot in reverse chronological [order]. He was literally in touch with production every day to make sure that we timed all of the looks in the right way.”
Bloom also candidly explained why he did not advise people to follow his same weight loss regimen.
“While I would not recommend this kind of extreme weight loss — particularly without the close supervision of an excellent nutritionist — I have to say that the human body is truly remarkable,” the actor told E! News on Friday. “Despite the deprivations required to get into the shape you see in the film, my body recovered relatively quickly, and I have returned to a much more sustainable health and fitness routine.”
Bloom, who shed a total of 52 pounds to play the Boxer in the psychological thriller film, revealed some of the side effects he experienced.
“The mental challenges were arguably worse than the physical ones,” he said. “The lack of concentration, the mood swings, the sleep deprivation — they were no joke. Thankfully, once I went back to my normal diet and exercise, the psychological symptoms abated.”
Bloom added, “If I didn’t believe before that physical health and mental health are absolutely connected. I certainly do now.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean star previously dished on his weight loss last month during an episode of This Morning.
“I had a great nutritionist,” Bloom explained on August 27 when asked how he achieved the weight loss. “I was recommended by one of my agents who worked with Christian Bale on some stuff, so he was checking my blood and stuff.”
Bloom said that eventually, he cut several foods out of his diet and began only eating one meal a day while filming.
“He basically tiered me down from three meals a day to two, to one,” he said of his nutritionist. “Suddenly, all these foods were being taken away from me, and my protein powder was the last one.”
Bloom continued, “Mentally, physically, I was hangry. I was a horrible person to be around. The paranoia, the intrusive thoughts. We’re supposed to eat and sleep and take care of ourselves. It’s really a commentary on the lengths a person will go to have that second shot. I think that’s so relatable.”
