Scheana Shay Reveals Biological Father in New Memoir

Among the many revelations in Scheana Shay’s new memoir (and trust Us, there are many), is the name of her biological father — something that was never addressed on Vanderpump Rules, at least not in the final edit.

“Season 9, there were a lot of stories that were filmed and didn’t end up making it on the show. And one of them was a whole friendship with myself and Katie Maloney. [There was one night] I sat in her living room, we had some wine, and she was like, ‘I just don’t understand how you could be OK with Brock leaving his family,’” Shay, 40, tells Us Weekly during her cover story interview. (Shay’s husband, Brock Davies, has a strained relationship with his two older children, a son and a daughter, from his first marriage who live in Australia with their mom.)

Shay continues: “And I said, ‘It is more complicated than that. You don’t understand all of the nuances and everything that was going on at that time. They have a very present stepfather in their life and just like I was raised by my stepfather — who is my dad, I’ve never even liked referring to him as my stepdad — I understood.’”

In Shay’s book, My Good Side, out on Tuesday, July 22, Shay reveals her mother, Erika, met a man named Raul at a Halloween party in Las Vegas in 1983. At the time, Erika was also casually dating her future husband Ron. Shay writes that after Erika and Raul “unintentionally conceived” her “sometime during the 1984 Olympics,” Ron stepped up. Shay met Raul for the first time when she was 2, but he kept a distance as Erika and Ron raised her.

“My biological father’s a great guy. And now, later in life, we do have a great relationship. I talk to him weekly,” Shay tells Us.

The Bravo star initially hesitated to talk about Raul because she was “afraid of hurting my dad and his feelings.”

“[I didn’t want] his friends at work who watched the show to question, like, ‘Wait, you’re not her real dad?’ No, he is my real dad. He may not be my biological father, but he is my real dad,” Shay says. “But with the book, this [is a] huge part of my upbringing and how I didn’t feel like I fit in. I am half-Mexican, but I didn’t grow up speaking Spanish, making tamales at Thanksgiving or Christmas and all of those traditions.”

Now, Shay has a relationship with both her dad’s side of the family and her biological father’s side.

“It’s never too late — I do get some holidays with that side of the family, and I’m so thankful that I have such a big extended family,” she says.

Since Shay introduced Davies on Vanderpump Rules, fans have been critical of his past. During a 2021 episode of the show, he revealed he hadn’t spoken to his two oldest kids in four years following legal drama, including an order of protection related to a domestic violence incident and Davies falling behind on child support. (The order was later dropped and Davies claimed in 2022 that he had paid off the child support for his two kids.)

“My biological father took a step back because that was what was best for me. And as much as people want to just see [Brock] as a man who abandoned his family — I know that’s how it looks from the outside — he was 19 and 20 years old when he had kids. Staying in a toxic relationship wasn’t going to be what was best for them,” Shay tells Us. “I did have a conversation with his ex-wife and said, ‘I’m the kids in this situation and I am so thankful that my biological father took a step back so that I could be raised by an amazing dad.’”

Shay says she “genuinely hopes” that Davies can have a relationship with his two oldest kids in the future.

“His kids are now 12 and 13 — it’s going to be up to them if they choose to have us in their lives,” she explains. “We are here with open arms and an open door if they’re ever ready for that.”

Shay and Davies wed in August 2022 and share daughter Summer, 4. In the book, Shay reveals that Davies cheated on her when she was pregnant with their daughter, a misstep she didn’t learn about until spring 2023. One of the reasons Shay decided to stay with Davies is because he’s proved himself as a father.

“When I talk about what an amazing father he is to her, [I know] that can be extremely hurtful to his ex-wife and two kids because they deserved that. But they do have that with their stepfather and they wouldn’t have that if he stuck around,” Shay says. “[After finding out about the affair], I really needed some time to process what I was going to do. I was like, ‘I’m going to let a mistake you made a couple years ago ruin everything we’ve built now?’ No, you don’t get to do that. You don’t get to ruin our lives.”

Shay believes Davies self-sabotaged. “I can have sympathy now and understand that he felt like he didn’t deserve a second chance at being a father,” Shay says. “That really broke my heart for him, that he felt like he needed to sabotage something so amazing because he didn’t deserve it. We can’t let our past define who we are, and I didn’t want him to wear that for the rest of his life.”

Shay adds that the twosome have put in the work in individual and couples therapy, telling Us, “I want to show people that if you truly love someone, a mistake from their past doesn’t have to define the future of your relationship.”
