The Paper season 1 may be over — but what can fans expect in season 2 after those cliffhangers?
The first season — which premiered on Thursday, September 4 — came to a close with Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) and Mare Pritti (Chelsea Frei) finally exploring a romantic connection. Meanwhile, Detrik (Melvin Gregg) and Nicole (Ramona Young) went their separate ways after a workplace situationship.
Creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, alongside some members of the cast, broke down the biggest moments — and how it could impact season 2 — during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly.
“When you do a 10 episode chunk that drops every year, it’s not exactly the same as the original Office, which might be 25 episodes with a month off and then starting over again,” Daniels explained to Us ahead of The Paper’s premiere. “We are talking about it – is it more like books, is the first season, New Moon or Twilight, and then the next one is the next book in the series? How do you parse it out? — we are just entering our first thoughts about that.”
The Paper was picked up for a second season one day before the series premiere. Scroll down to see the cast and creators weigh in on season 1’s biggest cliffhangers:
Where Do Detrik and Nicole Stand?
Young shared that season 1 felt like “an emotional roller-coaster” for Nicole, while Gregg noted that the pair’s characters might have a different lens in season 2.
“I think they both would come out of season 1 being affected,” Gregg explained to Us. “So their approach in season 2 will be based off of the results they got in season 1.”
Will Oscar Allow Himself to Be Filmed the Whole Time?
Oscar Nuñez noted that his character is a “pragmatist,” teasing that Oscar may have a change of heart and learn to embrace the documentary film crew. “He may or may not come around,” Nuñez teased to Us. “Stay tuned. He’s trapped there — that’s his job — and they are filming a thing, so he has to make a choice.”
Will We Learn More About Adelola Outside of the Newsroom?
Gbemisola Ikumelo shared it would be “pretty great” to learn more of Adelola Olofin’s backstory outside of The Toledo Truth Teller.
“I wrote a sort of Bible for this character, sort of like her past, her future and all these things that I would love to see happen for her,” Ikumelo told Us. “Maybe hopefully we see that in some future seasons.”
Will We See More of Adam’s Dynamic With His Wife?
Alex Edelman (who portrays Adam Cooper) would love to share more scenes with his onscreen wife, Molly Ephraim.
“She shines and she was a joy to be with on set,” Edelman gushed to Us. “She was so brilliant. Hopefully you get to see more of her in season 2. It was a blast.”
Will There Be More Office Alums in Season 2?
The question on everyone’s mind is whether more OGs from Dunder Mifflin will be making their way on screen in season 2 — and Daniels and Koman are remaining tight-lipped.
“I certainly would say for this season, really, our focus was on these new characters and their stories,” Koman told Us. “The future is the future.”
The Paper season 1 is streaming now on Peacock.
