Despite playing Jenna Ortega‘s love interest on Wednesday, Hunter Doohan isn’t thrilled with the false rumors that his husband, Fielder Jewett, is jealous of their relationship.
In Us Weekly‘s exclusive clip from the Tuesday, September 9, episode of Tommy DiDario‘s “I’ve Never Said This Before” podcast, Doohan, 31, admitted he has “been struggling with how much” of himself he wanted to share publicly.
“The Wednesday fans, every interaction I’ve had with them in real life has been so great. And online [everything] is mostly positive,” he explained. “It’s not the fans of the show — there’s honestly been these weird videos on TikTok that have spread rumors about me and Jenna and Emma [Myers] and other cast member’s personal lives are just so not true.”
Doohan has been conflicted on whether to publicly address the misinformation.
“This stuff gets spread around and people believe it. Sometimes it makes me want to protect myself more and not share anything from my personal life, and sometimes I want to comment on [it],” he added. “Surely people aren’t believing this s***?”
Wednesday, which premiered in 2022, skyrocketed Doohan to fame as Tyler Galpin, who started out as Ortega’s onscreen love interest before expanding into a main character on the show. Tyler and Wednesday were in a relationship in season 1 before turning into enemies with undeniable chemistry, which has inspired plenty of fan edits and support on social media.
With the overwhelming support for the fictional relationship has come false speculation about Doohan and Ortega’s friendship by online trolls.
“I got to go to Sydney for an event for part 2 of Wednesday season 1, but I couldn’t go to the London premiere because I was here [in New Zealand] shooting [a movie]. I even posted it where I was like, ‘Oh, I wish I could be there,'” Doohan told DiDario. “And there’s rumors — I saw one where Jenna didn’t allow me to go, which is so not true. There was a rumor that my husband didn’t let me go because he is jealous of Jenna. I was like, ‘You guys. Can we be so f***ing for real right now?'”
Doohan, who has been married to Jewett since 2022, slammed the “ridiculous” rumors, adding, “My husband — for the record — did not tell me not to go to the Wednesday premiere because he’s jealous of Jenna. Grow up.”
He continued: “I love her to death. It’s so stupid. It’s something like — why even say it [when it is] so ridiculous? Because I think most people see through it. But then we get these, like, crazy messages or he gets these crazy messages and it’s just so insane.”
Despite the untrue narrative being spread by a small group on social media, Doohan and Ortega, 22, have remained close friends. The pair had a blast getting to reunite for season 2 of Netflix’s Wednesday, which premiered in two parts this summer as Wednesday and Tyler’s romance got more complicated.
“To him, Tyler thought his whole life that his mom had just died, and then he finds out she died because she was a Hyde and that had been hidden from him. Then Laurel obviously comes in and grooms him and blames the outcasts for his mom’s death. Then he finally understands why his dad hates him because, for Tyler, he always wanted his dad’s love and didn’t understand why he treated him the way he did,” Doohan exclusively told Us in August. “So Wednesday felt like maybe the one person who — because she’s Wednesday Addams — wouldn’t be afraid of him and hate him for those parts of himself and might actually embrace it.”
Doohan didn’t shut the door on Tyler and Wednesday’s romance before returning to film season 3. “Can anyone be too dark for Wednesday Addams?” he quipped to Us at the time.
Wednesday is currently streaming on Netflix.
