Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, moved across the pond where they are admittedly thriving.
DeGeneres and de Rossi, who have been married since 2008, relocated from Los Angeles to England in fall 2024.
“It’s absolutely beautiful. We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty,” DeGeneres said during a talk with broadcaster Richard Bacon in July 2025. “The villages and the towns and the architecture — everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.”
She added, “It’s clean. Everything here is just better, the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”
DeGeneres and de Rossi even brought their menagerie of pets, including a stable of horses, to the United Kingdom.

Why Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi Moved
DeGeneres said during her BBC conversation that she and the Arrested Development alum initially purchased acreage in the Cotswolds to use as a “part-time house.” They made their move permanent after Donald Trump won the presidential election in November 2024.
“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in,’” the comedian recalled. “And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi Live in the Countryside
The former Ellen DeGeneres Show host often shares glimpses of the couple’s new abode via social media, showing off the open-concept floor plan with cozy decor such as flannel blankets, leather armchairs and a copper-colored striped area rug.
They ultimately listed the 43-acre property, named Kitesbridge Farm, for sale in July 2025.
“When we decided to live here full-time, we knew that Portia couldn’t live without her horses,” DeGeneres told The Wall Street Journal in a statement. “We needed a home that had a horse facility and pastures for them.”
A source told Us in August 2025 that DeGeneres had been spending the bulk of her time farming, gardening and taking care of her pet animals.
“Those close to her have never seen her happier,” the insider added.
Taking in the Sites
After DeGeneres and de Rossi moved to England, a source exclusively told Us Weekly that they have been regular guests at the exclusive Soho Farmhouse.
“She was dressed in a country casual way,” the insider said in November 2024. “She was super understated and no one was really paying much attention to her … but then you just don’t expect to see Ellen there as it’s more a haunt of U.K. celebrities.”
A New Life
A source told Us in August 2025 that DeGeneres had seamlessly adapted to her new life across the pond.
“It’s a different lifestyle for her,” the insider told Us in a cover story. “She’s very chill and in her element.”
According to the source, DeGeneres and de Rossi had been contemplating a move for a while before making the final call.
“They had visited before and looked at homes but weren’t sure when they would do it,” the insider noted. “When they found the right place, they jumped on it.”
Bonding With Fellow Expats
Rosie O’Donnell also moved abroad in 2025, settling in Ireland with her then-12-year-old child, Clay.
“I’ve never really known Ellen to say anything political in her life, so I was surprised to read that she left because of President Trump. Like, that shocked me, actually,” O’Donnell exclusively told Us in April 2025. “I’ve been a political person my whole life, not better or worse, it’s just a different way to be in the world. … We’re not really in each other’s worlds, and it’s been kind of awkward, but you know what? I wish her the best. I wish that she has peace and love in her life and that she is OK.”
Months later in July 2025, Trump publicly threatened to revoke O’Donnell’s American citizenship. DeGeneres was vocal in her support of the actress.
“Good for you, @rosie,” DeGeneres wrote via social media at the time.
