Where iCarly's Miranda Cosgrove Stands With Jennette McCurdy After Memoir

Miranda Cosgrove offered a rare update on where she stands with Jennette McCurdy after her former costar’s surprising memoir revelations.

“I don’t really see her as much now,” Cosgrove, 32, told People on Sunday, September 7, while acknowledging that her friendship with McCurdy, 33, is different than it was when they hung out “all the time” as teenagers.

“[But] I always know she’s out there, and that if I really needed her I could call her, and I hope she knows the same,” she continued. “I’m always going to be cheering for her.”

Cosgrove noted that she felt “really lucky” to have had McCurdy and Nathan Kress during their rise to stardom. From 2007 to 2012, the trio filmed iCarly, which followed a teenager named Carly (Cosgrove) who created and hosted her own web show with the help of her best friends.

“We had each other,” Cosgrove told the outlet about her individual friendships with McCurdy and Kress, 32, after their time on Nickelodeon’s hit early aughts show. “I’ll always love them, and they’ll always be family to me, because we grew up together for so many years.”

The show was such a success it spawned two spinoffs. The first, Sam & Cat, aired from 2013 to 2014 and followed McCurdy’s character, Sam, in a crossover project alongside Cat from Victorious, played by Ariana Grande. The second show featured Noah Munck‘s character, Gibby, in a self-titled sitcom that followed him as he worked at a recreation center as a mentor to middle school students. A pilot was filmed but never aired, and the series was never picked up.

iCarly was revived by Paramount+ in 2021. Set nearly a decade after the events of the original series, the new show followed Carly as she restarted her web show alongside roommate Harper (Laci Mosley) and Freddie.

While Cosgrove and Kress returned for the revival — which ran three seasons — McCurdy opted not to reprise her role. She instead hit pause on her acting career and released a memoir in 2023 titled I’m Glad My Mom Died.

In the book, McCurdy recalled her difficult childhood, which included abusive behavior from her since-deceased mother. McCurdy also mentioned her friendship with Cosgrove often while reflecting on the positive moments from her time as a child star.

“It’s like an adult job in an adult world, and a kid’s in it. That makes it really strange,” Cosgrove told People about her experience working on iCarly. “So many kids end up acting since their parents wanted them to do it, and I think that’s where it gets really messy and complicated because then it’s way more about the parent than it is the child.”

Cosgrove said McCurdy “has found that thing in writing,” adding, “And I feel like that’s amazing, because her path led her to the thing that she loves. So I’m really happy for her.”
