3 Underrated Peacock Movies to Watch This Weekend (August 15-17)

18 hours ago 1

In the middle of the month, Peacock doesn’t always get a fresh infusion of movies like its streaming rivals Netflix and Prime Video.

However, there are a handful of recent arrivals that stand out even when placed alongside the streamer’s more well-known films.

The Watch With Us team has selected the three underrated Peacock movies that you need to watch this weekend, especially if you’re looking for something off the beaten path.

Our first selection is an action thriller, followed by an unexpectedly moving family drama and a fan-favorite comedy that’s celebrating an anniversary this month.

‘Monkey Man’ (2024)

Monkey Man doesn’t actually feature a leading character who is part-monkey or cursed with a monkey-like transformation. Instead, the monkey mask is part of a gimmick used by Kid (Dev Patel) during his underground fighting matches. Patel cowrote and directed this tale of revenge, which begins years earlier when Kid witnessed the death of his mother, Neela (Adithi Kalkunte), and their entire village.

Kid knows exactly who is responsible for the misery in his life: Rana Singh (Sikandar Kher), the corrupt police chief who is under the thumb of Baba Shakti (Makarand Deshpande). In order to avenge his loved ones, Kid needs to hide his past and get as close as possible to them as he can. However, Kid’s desire for vengeance may destroy him in the process.

‘Housekeeping for Beginners’ (2024)

Housekeeping for Beginners went under the radar in 2024, and its debut on Peacock is the highest-profile release that it’s had. Anamaria Marinca stars as Dita, a woman who is deeply in love with her partner, Sauda (Alina Serban). So much so that they live with Sauda’s daughters, Vanessa (Mia Mustafa) and Mia (Dzada Selim), as well as the couple’s gay friend, Toni (Vladimir Tintor), and a few other outcasts.

Dita never wanted to be a mother, but she doesn’t have a choice when Sauda dies from a terminal illness. Somehow, Dita and Toni have to find a way to hold their makeshift family together. The odds are against them, but their hearts are joined in purpose.

Twenty-five years ago this month, Kirsten Dunst starred in Bring It On, a cheerleading comedy that spawned six different sequels, none of which involved Dunst. Unsurprisingly, the original remains the best and the funniest of the films, thanks to Dunst and her costars.

The story revolves around Torrance Shipman (Dunst), the new captain of her high school cheer team, the Toros. A new recruit for the squad, Missy Pantone (Eliza Dushku), reveals that Torrance’s predecessor stole the Toros’ cheer routines from another high school team called the Clovers. As Torrance scrambles to bring her team together with a new routine, the Clovers’ leader, Isis (Gabrielle Union), promises that her team will get payback by defeating the Toros in the national cheerleading championship. Despite how nasty that rivalry sounds, this is actually a really good flick that doesn’t forget to be funny.
