Chicago Fire's Hanako Greensmith Teases Violet's Future After Carver's Exit

Chicago Fire’s Violet has been through the wringer in the romance department — and her relationship with Carver doesn’t appear to be any different.

“Violet has taken on so much heartbreak and disappointment and frustration,” Hanako Greensmith, who plays paramedic Violet, told Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday, August 27, hinting that her and firefighter Carver’s (Jake Lockett) bliss from season 13 will be short-lived.

The actress, 28, explained, “I feel as if I am witnessing her walk into a new phase of her life where she’s learning to live with these disappointments in a different way. They’re just kind of adding to the tapestry of her experience as opposed to being the chip that weighs her down.”

Greensmith teased that “it’s single girl season” for Violet — and possibly her paramedic partner, Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) — as they both had boy troubles to end last season.

“I can’t give away too much, but I am excited to have those answers myself because as of right now, it does seem as if Violet is in a new dating pool in a different way than she has been before,” she added.

During the season 13 finale, which aired in May, Violet and Carver finally kissed — but only after he revealed he put in for a job in Denver. Novak, for her part, was hooking up with firefighter Jack Damon, played by Michael Bradway, who announced in July that he was leaving the NBC drama.

Showrunner Andrea Newman exclusively told Us Weekly at the time that it was a “beautiful thing” for Carver and Violet to say, “I love you.” However, she teased that the happiness could be cut short, especially since Lockett, 40, confirmed in April that he wouldn’t be returning for season 14.

“Do they get this moment and then that’s all? Or do they get to explore past that and kind of see where it goes?” Newman asked, revealing “that’s the question hanging in the air” going into the upcoming season.

Greensmith, meanwhile, confirmed on Wednesday that there will be a “bit of a time jump” to start the new season, which she said is positive.

“We’re going to be giving answers to a couple of the questions from last season pretty immediately,” she told EW. “No one should be left with too bated of a breath.”

When it comes to the question of Violet and Carver’s fate as a couple, Greensmith hinted that she will be mending a broken heart.

“I think she’s walking into a new phase of her adulthood,” she said of her character’s next steps. “A part of growing up is learning, like, how to live with [heartbreak] as opposed to [living] against it.”

Greensmith also appeared to confirm that Lockett won’t be back after the time jump while singing his praises as an actor.

“It’s been such a dream working with Jake,” she revealed. “It was really wonderful to get to live out those last few scenes together and just bring to life as much as possible and make it as heartfelt and raw and honest as possible.”

Chicago Fire returns on NBC Wednesday, October 1, at 9 p.m. ET. Chicago Med’s new season begins the same night at 8 p.m. ET, while Chicago P.D. picks back up at 10 p.m. ET.
