Did Emma Stone Shave Her Head for 'Bugonia'? Hair Transformation Explained

In Hollywood today, several actors and actresses are committed to going the extra mile when it comes to transforming themselves to play characters — including Emma Stone.

The Oscar-winning actress has sported a number of hair colors and styles over the years as she’s taken on memorable roles in films like La La Land and Poor Things, the latter of which she donned long black extensions for.

“[The hair] is kind of its own character,” hair, makeup and prosthetics designer Nadia Stacey told Allure in December 2023 of Stone’s Poor Things look. “It says something about who she is. It’s this constant reminder of this really stark, jet-black hair against all this amazing color. She doesn’t fit in everything around her. She’s kind of alien in all of that — she’s different.”

Fans were stunned in August 2025 when Stone debuted one of her most dramatic hairdos yet, sporting a bald head in the trailer for Yorgos LanthimosBugonia. But did the actress really shave her head? Scroll below for more on her latest hair transformation.

Did Emma Stone Shave Her Head for ‘Bugonia’?

Stone did say goodbye to her hair for Bugonia, a choice that she felt was freeing.

“No better feeling in the world,” Stone said of ditching her ginger locks during an August 2025 interview with Vogue.

She continued, “The first shower when you’ve shaved your head? Oh my God, it’s amazing.”

Stone remembered a time when her mother, Krista, underwent treatment for breast cancer and lost her hair. “She actually did something brave,” the Eddington actress shared. “I’m just shaving my head.”

What Character Does Emma Stone Play in ‘Bugonia’?

In the film, Stone portrays pharmaceutical CEO Michelle Fuller, who is kidnapped by alien conspiracists Teddy (Jesse Plemons) and Don (Aidan Delbis) after they’re “convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth,” per IMDb.

Jennifer Lawrence Reacted to Emma Stone’s Shaved Head

Not everyone was on board with Stone’s bald head transformation at the start. Stone’s longtime friend Jennifer Lawrence told Vogue she “really didn’t want her to shave her head.”

“I had already lived through the Billie Jean King haircut,” Lawrence quipped, referencing Stone’s portrayal of King in the 2017 film Battle of the Sexes, in which she sported a retro shaggy haircut.

Despite her initial concern over the big chop, Lawrence was ultimately a fan of Stone’s new look.

“Honestly, she looked beautiful,” the No Hard Feelings actress said. “She pulled it off.”

Why Emma Stone’s Fans Are Shaving Their Heads

While Bugonia set its nationwide release for October 24, 2025, fans got the opportunity to see a special screening at the Culver Theater in California on October 20, 2025, under one condition — they had to shave their heads.

“This special screening is for anyone who is bald,” the event’s official page said. “If you are not bald, we will have a barber on site to shave your head in order for you to watch the film. Screening starts at 8 p.m., but the barber will be set up at 6 p.m. to start shaving heads.”

Promotion for the event also drew a lot of attention on DoLA’s Instagram page. “This is real. And yes, part of it will be filmed,” the caption of the post read.

“Finally an event to celebrate the bald community!” one person commented, while another asked, “Wait can we only come see the movie if we’re willing to get our heads shaved?”

Others questioned if the hair would be donated to charity, writing, “Would be nice if you’re donating the hair to locks of love, maybe?”

“It’s breast cancer awareness month you guys should do it in conjunction with honoring fighters and survivors,” another Instagram user commented.
