Colleen Hoover to Pull Out of Work Commitments Due to ‘Unavoidable Surgery’

Colleen Hoover is taking a pause from all work-related commitments.

The author, 45, announced the news in a post shared via Instagram on Friday, October 17. “I hate to have to announce this, but I will not be moderating the signing for @lukasgage this month, nor will I be able to attend the premiere or any events for @regrettingyoumovie,” she wrote. “I’m super bummed, but am having an unavoidable surgery and can’t travel for a while. But please show up for @lukasgage and also for @regrettingyoumovie. @annatodd will now be moderating for @lukasgage so you guys show up to his Los Angeles event through details on his page.”

Hoover will miss the premiere of the film adaptation of her 2019 book, Regretting You, which will debut in theaters on Friday, October 24.

“And please tag me in all your @regrettingyoumovie posts when it releases next week!” she added. “I’ll live vicariously through you guys. So sad to miss this movie release and premiere, but so grateful to all the actors and the team who put this together.”

Hoover did not elaborate on the surgery or any related health conditions.

The news was shared the same day People reported that Hoover was part of a group of people deposed in Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s ongoing legal drama. Lively, 38, sued Baldoni, 41, in December 2024 and accused her former It Ends With Us costar and director of sexual harassment, creating a hostile work environment and launching a smear campaign against her. Baldoni denied the allegations and countersued; his lawsuit against the actress was dismissed, but Lively’s will go to trial in March 2026.

The outlet noted that Hoover recently participated in a deposition, and that It Ends With Us costars Jenny Slate and Isabela Ferrer were deposed this summer.

Regretting You follows the story of mother-daughter duo Morgan and Clara, who are played by Allison Williams and Mckenna Grace, respectively. The pair are forced to find new ways to reconnect after Morgan’s husband and Clara’s father, Chris (Scott Eastwood), gets in an accident that ends in tragedy. Additional cast members include Dave Franco as Jonah, Mason Thames as Miller and Willa Fitzgerald as Jenny. The movie is directed by Josh Boone.

“I think we try to keep as close to the book as possible,” the movie’s producer Flavia Viotti told Entertainment Weekly in July 2025. “We know Colleen Hoover has a strong fan base, and we don’t want to disappoint them. But I don’t think fans will be disappointed.”

Regretting You is just one of several of Hoover’s novels that have hit the big screen or will soon. Lively and Baldoni starred in It Ends With Us, which landed in theaters in August 2024.

Hoover announced a second novel, Verity, will be adapted into a feature film by Amazon MGM Studios and will star Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett and Dakota Johnson. That movie is set to debut in theaters in October 2026.

In April, Hoover said the film had concluded filming. “And that’s a wrap! … Thank you to the entire cast, crew and production teams!” the author captioned a clip shared via Instagram. “And to @annehathaway for this video. Cannot wait for you guys to see this one, it’s gonna be twisted and gorgeous!”
