Dancing With the Stars‘ Dedication Night brought out plenty of emotions both in and out of the ballroom — including confusion.
Pro Jenna Johnson gave her hot takes about each performance during the Thursday, October 16, episode of the “Dancing With the Stars Official Podcast,” hosted by her season 33 partner, Joey Graziadei. Johnson, 31, praised the heartfelt inspirations behind each routine, but there was one score she thought was surprising.
“Elaine [Hendrix] is one of my favorite celebrities that’s ever been [on the show],” Johnson said of the actress, who is paired with Alan Bersten. “I just adore her, and her dancing is exquisite.”
Hendrix, 54, took Us back in time on Tuesday, October 14, with her foxtrot to “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” by Natalie Cole, which was dedicated to her best friend and Parent Trap costar Lisa Ann Walter. Bersten, 31, effortlessly incorporated Walter, 62, into his choreography, but in the end, the routine only earned 30 points out of a possible 40.
“I felt like this was actually one of her best dances, so I’m a little shocked at the scoring,” Johnson admitted on Thursday while recapping the “magical” performance. “I love the notes that [the judges] gave her … but I thought she deserved at least all eights, maybe even a nine.”
Johnson, who was eliminated from season 34 alongside partner Corey Feldman in September, said she hopes Hendrix and Bersten will “come back swinging” for Wicked Night on October 21.
While she would’ve liked to see Hendrix higher on the leaderboard, Johnson thought Dylan Efron and Daniella Karagach earned their place at the top. Efron, 33, dedicated his contemporary dance to little sister Olivia, who made an adorable cameo in the ballroom on Tuesday. The judges were unanimous in their scoring, giving a total of 36 points — the highest of the season so far.
Johnson said the number, which was set to Zac Efron‘s “Rewrite the Stars” from The Greatest Showman, was a standout moment for Dylan. “I think he deserved all of those nines,” she insisted.
Following his sentimental performance, Dylan exclusively told Us Weekly wasn’t expecting such a high score. The emotional aspect of the night, however, felt more important.
“The scores are always secondary,” he explained. “We want to just go out there and do our best every week. And that’s really what we’re trying to do when we finish that dance. We want to feel like we left it all out there.”
The Dedication Night scores may have taken some fans by surprise, but an even bigger twist came when there was no elimination. Jordan Chiles and her partner, Ezra Sosa, told Us the whole ballroom was thrown for a loop by the reveal.
“I think everybody — not even just us — but everybody’s moods were just like, ‘Are you serious right now?'” Chiles, 24, said on Tuesday. “I was pissed, personally.”
Sosa, also 24, chimed in, “You can’t play these mind games with us. That’s not right. It’s almost worse. You’re going to line us up? No, girl. No. Send someone home. Just do it. Come on.”
Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC and Disney+ Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
