Jana Kramer is addressing her views on sunscreen before critics throw even more shade.
“I’m just doing what I think is best for my kids,” Kramer, 41, shared on the Wednesday, July 16, episode of iHeartRadio’s “Whine Down” podcast. “I would never let my children just burn out in the sun.”
The One Tree Hill alum acknowledged that she is not a dermatologist and doesn’t have all the answers. Instead, she’s open to the research on all sides of the sunscreen debate.
“I have seen so much negative stuff about sunscreen — what it can do, what it can cause,” she explained. “I’ve also seen the negative things that I’ve read about the sun and what it can do and what it can cause. I think there’s a healthy balance between the two. I think we need both, and we don’t need an excess of both.”
Earlier this month, Kramer made headlines when she discussed her philosophy on how much sunscreen she applies to her own children.
Kramer shares daughter Jolie, 9, and son Jace, 6, with ex-husband Mike Caussin. She also has a son named Roman, 20 months, with husband Allan Russell.
“There’s so much bad stuff in sunscreen that if we’re not going to be out there for more than a couple of hours — listen, come at me. But I’m just not putting it on,” she alleged. “I will if we’re on the beach for hours and the reflection of all the things, like, I’ll put it on his neck, his ears — the baby — but like, the kids, I haven’t put any on them because I’m like, ‘They’re not getting burned.’ What’s worse, the burn or the suntan lotion?”
After the podcast episode aired, Kramer said 80 percent of people who DMed her were supportive and had positive messages. The other 20 percent were unkind and called her “an idiot.”
“I replied to a few of them and said, ‘No need for name-calling,’” Kramer shared. “I didn’t say always. … I put sunscreen on their neck, their ears and sometimes on their legs if we’re going to a beach, a long day. But a couple of hours? No, I’m not going to, and that’s OK.”
The “Why Ya Wanna” singer assured listeners that she is open to feedback. And yes, she is applying sunscreen when she deems necessary.
“Again, I would not let my kids fry,” she added. “And I’m open to anything kindly that someone wants to flood into my DMS in a nice manner.”
