Natasha Richardson’s Family Guide: Mom, Siblings, Children and More

Natasha Richardson was Hollywood royalty long before her marriage to Liam Neeson.

Richardson grew up as a member of the Redgrave family, a theatrical and film acting dynasty. Natasha was the eldest daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson. In addition to Natasha, the pair shared daughter Joely Richardson.

Natasha and Joley’s parents divorced in 1967 and went on to welcome children with other partners. Redgrave welcomed son Carlo Gabriel Nero with husband Franco Nero. Tony shared daughter Katherine Grimond Hess with Grizelda “Jane” Grimond. Tony died in 1991 due to AIDS-related causes. Following her father’s passing, Natasha helped raise funds to aid in the fight against the disease.

In 1995, Natasha started her own family with Neeson with the arrival of son Micheál Richardson. The couple completed their brood with Daniel Neeson the following year.

Tragedy struck in March 2009 after Natasha was injured during a skiing accident. While Natasha thought she was fine at first, she suffered a traumatic brain injury. The actress was subsequently taken to the hospital, where she was put on life support after being declared brain dead.

Vanessa Redgrave

Vanessa was the daughter of actors Sir Michael Redgrave and Lady Rachel Redgrave. The couple also shared Lynn Redgrave and Corin Redgrave.

Like her parents, Vanessa pursued an acting career. Vanessa found success as an actress as she’s one of the few who’ve achieved the Triple Crown of Acting: she has earned an Academy Award, a Tony Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards and an Olivier Award.

She is best known for her roles in Julia, Playing for Time, If These Walls Could Talk 2, Isadora, Mary, Queen of Scots, The Bostonians, Howards End, Letters to Juliet, Mission: Impossible, Camelot, Deep Impact, Atonement and more.

Vanessa tied the knot with Tony in 1962. They welcomed Natasha and Joely in May 1963 and January 1965, respectively. Vanessa and Tony divorced in 1967.

Following her split from Tony, Vanessa moved on with Franco, who played her love interest in Camelot. After connecting on set, the pair welcomed son Carlo in 1969. Two years after his birth, Vanessa and Franco split. However, they rekindled their romance decades later and tied the knot in 2006. The couple remain together to this day.

Following Natasha’s death in March 2009, Vanessa also lost both her siblings within 14 months. Her brother, Courin, died in April 2010, followed by her sister Lynn in May 2010.

In April 2015, Vanessa suffered a near-fatal heart attack. Five months later, the actress revealed that her lungs are working at only 30 percent capacity due to emphysema.

Vanessa penned a touching tribute for Natasha in July 2025 on what would have been her 62nd birthday shared by Joely via her Instagram page.

“Today would have been my sister Tasha’s birthday. I asked my Ma if she’d like to say anything. This is what she dictated to me,” Joely wrote ahead of her mother’s comment. “We were in Greece. We sat drinking our coffees in Constitution Square. Tony [Richardson] (my late father) said if the baby was a boy we should call him Tom. I said if she was a girl I would like her to be called Natasha after Tolstoy‘s War and Peace. Our Natasha, as yes she was a girl, came swimming out of my womb ready for anything. I can’t believe that she isn’t swimming somewhere now, in one of the pools or seas we explored. I will never be reconciled to her dying in the snow, and I’m sure that every mother who has lost a child will have that pain always.’”

Joely Richardson

Just like her sister and parents, Joely is also an actress. She is best known for her roles in Nip/Tuck, The Tudors, The Patriot, 101 Dalmatians, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and more. In addition to acting, Joely serves as an ambassador for the nonprofit organizations The Children’s Trust and Save the Children.

Joely was married to producer Tim Bevan from 1992 to 2001. The exes share daughter Daisy, whom they welcomed in 1992.

Carlo Gabriel Nero

Following his parents’ split when he was a toddler, Carlo spent his childhood between Italy with his father and London with his mother. Carlo also entered the entertainment world as a director.

His first film was 1999’s Uninvited, which was shown at Cannes. In 2004, he directed his mom, sister Joely and Angelina Jolie in the movie The Fever. Carlo has also worked on a series of documentaries, including Wake Up World, Bosnia Rising and Eyes of St. John. In 2017, he produced his mom’s documentary Sea Sorrow.

Katherine Grimond Hess

Grimond Hess is Natasha and Joely’s half sister on their father’s side. She is the daughter of Tony and Grizelda Jane Grimond. Unlike her siblings, Grimond Hess has remained out of the spotlight. She worked behind the scenes on the 1998 film Cousin Bette.

Grimond Hess has been married to Steven Hess since 2002. The couple share three children.

Liam Neeson

Natasha and Liam met on set of the play Anna Christie in 1993 one year after her divorce from Robert Fox. One year after meeting, the couple tied the knot. They welcomed sons Micheál and Daniel in 1995 and 1996, respectively. Liam and the Parent Trap actress remained together until her tragic death in 2009.

Following her passing, the actor shared that he was not interested in dating again after losing the love of his life. However, Liam found a second chance at love with his The Naked Gun costar, Pamela Anderson.

Michael Richardson

Liam and Natasha’s eldest son is following in his parents footsteps. Micheál made his acting debut in Brady Corbet‘s 2018 film Vox Lux. He has worked alongside his father in the films Cold Pursuit and Made in Italy. In 2021, Micheál scored his first leading role in On Our Way.

In 2018, Micheál changed his last name to honor his late mother.

Daniel Neeson

While Daniel studied theater at Tulane University, he opted not to follow in his family’s footsteps. Instead, Daniel has become an entrepreneur as he is the founder of the clothing brand Pine Outfitters and launched the additive-free tequila brand De-Nada.
