P.J. Washington Fights Ex Brittany Renner’s $35K Monthly Support Demand

NBA star PJ Washington is asking the court to shut down his ex Brittany Renner’s demand for a five-figure monthly child support payment, Us Weekly can exclusively report.

On Friday, October 17, the Dallas Mavericks forward, 27, claimed Renner’s petition to increase the current child support of $5,500 a month to $35,000 a month for their four-year-old son, Paul III, is improper.

Washington explained the current child support order was established as part of a court case between the exes in North Carolina. He said during the court battle, Renner was found in civil contempt for denying him court-appointed parenting time.

He claimed the exes settled before the scheduled trial in North Carolina. Washington said at the time Renner agreed that the $5,500 was sufficient for their child’s needs. Per the deal, Washington also agreed to pay 100% of the kids’ private school tuition and childcare expenses. The exes agreed to share joint custody.

The NBA star said, “less than one year after agreeing to the” current order, Renner filed the current case in a California court instead of a North Carolina court, which he said was familiar with Renner’s behavior.

Washington argued the California court does not have jurisdiction over him since he has no ties to the state, adding that he only learned about the case through the media since Renner sent the court notice to a home he is currently selling.

“He comes to California on short trips to play basketball, and he has less than 10 games per year in California,” the NBA player’s lawyer said in his filing. “Except for the basketball games, he has only been to California once or twice for non-work purposes since Paul III was born in 2021.” Washington currently lives in Texas.

His lawyer also noted that Paul III was not conceived in California, “but in North Carolina.”

“I do not, and have never consented for a California court to modify the child support order entered by the North Carolina court,” Washington said in his declaration. “I have never filed such consents in a record in the North Carolina court.”

He added, “I did not engage in sexual intercourse in California that might have caused Brittany’s pregnancy with Paul III. Paul III was conceived in North Carolina. During the entire period of my relationship with Brittany, we visited California together only once, for a couple of days.”

“I am a professional basketball player. Occasionally, my team has basketball games in California. When Paul III was born, I was playing for the Charlotte Hornets and I would play less than five games in California each year,” Washington continued. “In February 2024, I was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, and I have been playing less than ten games a year in California since then. Excluding these work-related trips, I have only visited California once or twice for non-work purposes since Paul III was born.”

Washington asked that Renner’s entire case in California be dismissed.

As Us previously reported, in her petition Renner said she moved from North Carolina to California in November 2024 after Washington moved from North Carolina to Texas. She said she moved to Los Angeles for work, where she starred on Basketball Wives for one season. Renner said she cannot afford her bills in California with the current child support. She said her job on Basketball Wives ended and she cannot afford her bills in California with the current child support.

“I am struggling to make ends meet and I cannot provide Paul III a life anywhere similar to that of his father,” Renner said. “To put in perspective how ridiculous current orders are, current child support payments … will comprise 0.30% of [Washington’s] monthly income. This is less than half a percent … of what [Washington] earns.”

Renner noted Washington signed a recent $90 million deal with the Mavericks. In her filing, Renner detailed Washington and his current wife’s “opulent lifestyle.” She said they live in a 7,000 square-foot mansion in Texas, drive luxury cars and wear designer clothes. She said she lives in a “humble” AirBnB rental while she buys clothes at Target.

Renner said she was making around $10,000 per month while working on Basketball Wives but currently has no income. She listed her assets as $81 in cash and bank accounts.

“Given [Washington’s] financial situation, I believe Paul III deserves to share in his father’s station in life,” Renner said. Currently, our home in West Hills is fine for me; however, I do not believe it is good enough for [our son]. I wish for Paul III to live in a home similar to that of his father and his half-siblings.”

The court has yet to rule on the case.
