Sherri Shepherd won’t let her love for The Real Housewives of Potomac prevent her from discussing Dr. Wendy Osefo’s recent arrest.
“I love all of the girls because some of them have been on my show,” Shepherd, 58, shared on the Wednesday, October 15, episode of Sherri. “They’ve all been really, really fun guests.”
When Shepherd learned that Wendy, 41, and her husband, Eddie Osefo, were arrested for fraud, she was “shocked” by the allegations. (A rep for the couple denied the charges and said they would fight the allegations in court.)
“Not Dr. Wendy, who is a pillar of the community, and not Eddie, who looks like he pays his taxes early,” she said before putting their mugshots on the big screen. “Well, not from this picture here.”
“That pains me because I really like them as a couple,” Shepherd continued. “It pains me, but it’s not as painful as Wendy’s mugshot. Ladies, I’m going to say if you ever get stopped, if you ever go to jail, don’t go to jail with a bad wig on. That’s gonna mess up everything. It’s one thing to get caught, but it’s a double crime if you get caught when the lace is lifted.”
A grand jury indicted Wendy and Eddie, 41, on insurance fraud, conspiracy insurance fraud and false statement to a police officer on October 9, according to court documents obtained by Us Weekly.
They were booked in Westminster, Maryland, but were released one day later after posting $50,000 bond each.
“Dr. Wendy Osefo and her husband, Edward Osefo, are back home safely with their family and in good spirits,” a rep for the couple told Us in a statement on October 10. “They are grateful for the outpouring of concern and support from friends, fans, and colleagues. The Osefos, alongside their legal team, look forward to their day in court. At this time, they respectfully ask for privacy as they focus on their family and the legal process ahead.”
While speaking to the audience on her talk show, Shepherd had a theory as to why Wendy was smiling in her mugshot.
“I said you got to smile in your mugshot because you don’t want anybody to know that you scared as all get out,” she joked. “A lot of people have not ever been fingerprinted and they fingerprint you. They put you in front of that height chart. Then they tell you to turn to the side. Then you see other people in their jail cell waiting, mean-mugging you. This poor woman is probably ready to cry. I want to cry with her because that’s just no fun.”
As a loyal viewer, Shepherd is aware that Wendy would often remind her costars that she has four degrees.
According to the talk show host, none of them did her any good when she was briefly behind bars.
“Your degrees don’t teach you how to lie to the cops. I watch all those crime shows. You can’t lie to these police or anybody. That’s why you don’t want to do nothing wrong,” Shepherd said. “They always catch you in the end. Girl, you are a professor, not a professional liar. You don’t know what you’re doing.”
All jokes aside, Shepherd made it clear that she is thinking of the Osefos and their three children as they navigate a legal matter.
“I feel like this is a problem that we have with the reality stars and these social media influencers because they always feel like they have to keep up with the Joneses. They always have to give you the illusion of this lifestyle of excess,” she said. “I genuinely hope that y’all didn’t do what they are alleging. … I don’t know what’s going on. I feel for you.”
