Nina Dobrev and Shaun White have ended their engagement, Us Weekly has learned.
People first reported on Thursday, September 11, that Dobrev, 36, and White, 39, broke up after five years together. Reps for Dobrev and White did not return Us Weekly’s request for comment.
The Vampire Diaries alum and the Olympian first sparked dating rumors in February 2020. Us broke the news two months later that they were officially an item.
In October 2021, White first opened up exclusively to Us about maintaining a long-distance relationship with Dobrev.
“We have a nice little system of how to stay in touch,” he explained at the time. “Plane tickets are pretty much booked for any opportunity that we can go see one another. So, I know during the holiday break, we’re going to meet up, and we’re going to meet up again probably around Christmas time. Anything that happens in between, then I’ll jet over and see her. You just make it work.”
He added: “I think that’s the goal of it all and the key to it all is just making the time. [Nina’s] super organized and on top of it, so I give it to her. She always finds a way to make it happen.”
The following year, White told Us that his romance with Dobrev was built on a solid foundation.
“We have common interests,” he said in January 2022. “The way in which we met really kind of strengthened our relationship. And the problems that we do face, they kind of fall away through communication. It’s just been great.”
After more than four years of dating, Dobrev and White announced their engagement via Instagram in October 2024. “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé 💍♾️,” she captioned photos of the pair standing in front of a floral arch as she showed off her diamond ring.
“She said YES 💍♾️,” White gushed in his own post.
The couple also shared their proposal story with Vogue at the time, with White telling the outlet that he opted to pop the question in New York City after his first two plans fell through. White ultimately arranged for Dobrev to receive a fake invitation for a CFDA Awards and Vogue dinner with Anna Wintour at the Golden Swan, which she accepted.
Dobrev recalled running late to the alleged event and worried that she had missed the cocktail hour when she arrived at the venue and everything was quiet. Then, she saw White and a photographer waiting for her amid an arch of white roses.
“I went into shock. I just froze and stared at him,” Dobrev told Vogue, adding that she started to say, “No, no, no!”
White was undeterred, noting that he “knew she was nervous because when she’s nervous she’ll make jokes.”
“She’s like, ‘So, wait, Anna’s not here?’” White recounted with a laugh. When he dropped to one knee, Dobrev said she blacked out, but she remembered that “he said all the right things.”
