‘Sex and the City’ Fans Spot Continuity Error on 'And Just Like That'

Sex and the City fans discovered an alleged continuity mistake on HBO Max’s And Just Like That spinoff.

After the newest episode premiered on Thursday, July 3, a viewer shared a TikTok video posing the question, “Has And Just Like That completely forget they killed Lisa’s dad off already?”

The clip showed Lisa (Nicole Ari Parker) telling Charlotte (Kristin Davis) about her father’s death on Thursday’s episode. The only issue? Lisa already revealed to Charlotte in season 1 that her dad was dead.

“My father died this afternoon. He had a stroke out of nowhere,” Lisa said in a season 3 clip. A season 1 scene then played, with Lisa telling Charlotte: “ I was the exact same way when I lost my dad last year. I could see my rings literally shaking on my hands while I was trying to be so strong.”

In the comments section, viewers point out that there have been several confusing plot points when it comes to Lisa’s family.

“Don’t forget he was already passed in season 1, and came for dinner in season 2, now he is gone again… not everyone gets that kind of second chance,” joked a social media user before another one quipped, “And just like that he was dead again.”

Others, however, questioned if this would get addressed later.

“Maybe in season 1 when she says she ‘lost’ him, she just set him down somewhere and misplaced him,” noted a viewer while another added, “Maybe she lost him like in a mall or Disneyland ?”

According to another eagle-eyed viewer, this isn’t the first goof that made it to air. “If you think this is bad, in season 1, Lily was playing at a piano recital for the Manhattan school of music. It was an all Mozart festival and they had her playing Beethoven’s moonlight Sonata,” the fan wrote.

Sex and the City, which ran on HBO from 1998 to 2004, focused on Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her dating life in New York alongside her friends Charlotte, Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall). Sex and the City expanded into two movies before Max revived the show in December 2021.

And Just Like That has since gotten viewers talking for a multitude of reasons. From major character returns — including a quick cameo by Cattrall — to potentially unpopular changes in the main characters’ lives, some Sex and the City fans haven’t been thrilled about all the changes taking place on screen.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King, meanwhile, stood by the show’s decision to take big creative swings.

“We did something that was hard to do, which is we took something familiar and did make it new,” King told Variety in February 2022. “For better and for worse.”

King weighed in on some of the reactions he saw on social media, adding, “I monitor in macro, not micro. I monitor in the drum beats: ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever seen! This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen. They should all be killed! I can’t live without them. The clothes are terrible, the clothes are great.’ I’m not into the minutia of anything.”
