Travis Kelce revealed having fiancée Taylor Swift on “New Heights” proved to be somewhat difficult for him.
“I was so wrapped [up] in what Tay was saying that I forgot we were trying to interview her,” Travis, 35, explained during the podcast’s Wednesday, August 27 episode. “It’s hard to interview someone that you love. You’re just kinda there to make sure they’re enjoying themselves.”
Travis praised his brother and cohost, Jason Kelce, who he said “crushed it” during the interview.
“The entire time, Jason’s over here playing Barbara Walters. Keeping the podcast on track,” Travis continued. “Everyone said you were the MVP. Everyone was saying what a great interviewer you are, and honestly, we both claim that this isn’t that.”
The Kansas City Chiefs player explained that “New Heights” is where the brothers try to “have some fun talking about some cool s***,” but Jason took it to a new level when Swift, 35, made her long-awaited appearance.
“Jason actually kept it [focused], asking great questions,” Travis said. “Kind of dumbing down some of the stuff Tay was saying — not necessarily dumbing down — but kind of just making it more clear to the people who aren’t familiar with the industry. You were killing it.”
Swift appeared on the August 13 episode to announce her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. The singer also offered insight into her relationship with Travis. While the couple were all loved up on the podcast, Jason was tasked with keeping the conversation going. (Travis and Swift announced their engagement via Instagram two weeks after her podcast appearance.)
While Jason hesitated to give himself props, he praised Swift for being so eloquent.
“I took away a lot from the interview. I mean, she’s incredibly brilliant. She’s very smart. She’s very funny,” Jason said on Wednesday. “When she said you were a human exclamation point, I was like, ‘God damn, she’s f***ing good with words.”
Jason also shared his thought process throughout the entire episode with Swift, revealing that he kept giving himself mental reminders.
“The whole time, all I said to myself was, ‘Jason, ask the question and don’t f***ing say another word. Just let Taylor talk. Don’t say anything, you’re a stupid idiot. Don’t ruin this. Nobody’s tuning in for you.’ That was the key,” Jason told his brother. “I knew that I was gonna have to take the lead asking questions because I felt the same way when we did the Kylie [Kelce] episode. When you’re both sitting right next to each other, it’s hard to stay on track.”
Travis ended the conversation by joking that “nobody” compared him to the late Walters when he facilitated the episode between Jason and Kylie.
