Adam Sandler left his sweatpants at home for the 82nd Venice International Film Festival.
Sandler, 58, walked the red carpet on Thursday, August 28, in a snazzy suit, a vast difference from the usual casual outfits he often wears to public events. The actor went with a navy color for his ensemble, which he paired with black leather sneakers. He opted not to wear a tie with the suit, perhaps a nod to his typical street style. Sandler sported a salt and pepper beard for the outing.
The actor posed for photos on the red carpet with Jay Kelly director Noah Baumbach and costars Greta Gerwig, Riley Keough, Billy Crudup, Laura Dern and Alba Rohrwacher. Sandler flashed a peace sign and smiled and laughed with his costars in some of the snaps from the event.
The film “follows famous movie actor Jay Kelly (George Clooney) and his devoted manager Ron (Adam Sandler) as they embark on a whirlwind and unexpectedly profound journey through Europe,” per Tudum. “Along the way, both men are forced to confront the choices they’ve made, the relationships with their loved ones, and the legacies they’ll leave behind.”
Sandler reflected on playing Ron and how the role was quite different from some of his other comedic performances.
“Being in this movie and not just trying to find jokes and laugh moments, that’s what’s amazing,” he said at the Jay Kelly press conference during the festival. “I’ve done two movies with Noah, and I could not be more proud to be in the feeling it gives you. He knows how to do everything, and then he finds places to make you laugh. All our characters give you a moment to laugh and feel pain. As an actor, when you read a script like this you say, ‘Holy s***, I can’t believe I’m getting this gift.’”
Jay Kelly also stars Clooney, 64, who was unable to attend the press events and dinner with the cast due to an illness on Wednesday, August 27.
“Unfortunately, George has a sinus infection and, under doctor’s orders, he has had to scale back his activities today,” a rep for Clooney told People.
At the film’s official press conference, Clooney’s absence was addressed by the moderator.
“As you may know, George Clooney is not going to be here because he has a bad sinus infection,” the moderator said. “We really hope, and I think he should be on the red carpet tonight. But he is very sorry he cannot be with us.”
Jay Kelly will be released in select theaters on November 14 and will be released globally on Netflix on December 5.
