Celeb Name-Drops From Charlie Sheen's Memoir: Johnny Depp and More

10 hours ago 1

Charlie Sheen’s memoir was full of celebrity name-drops — but some were more impactful to his life than others.

His famous father, Martin Sheen, and brother Emilio Estevez were among the stars named in The Book of Sheen, which was released on Tuesday, September 9. Some of Sheen’s former costars, including Jennifer Gray and Alan Ruck, were also mentioned. The Two and a Half Men alum referenced friend C. Thomas Howell, and there was one line about Tom Cruise in the book as well.

Even Tori Spelling’s name was thrown in the mix because, at one point, she lived in the same building as Sheen, now 60.

However, no one made more of an impact on Sheen’s life than his Platoon costars. Johnny Depp, specifically. Sheen was not a smoker when he first met Depp, 62, but that changed after they filmed the 1986 movie.

“I abandoned my first-class seat to spend hours in coach with Depp, so he could chain-smoke at the back of the plane,” Sheen wrote of their first meeting. “I remember watching him slaying cig after cig, and while he did look James Dean-kool doing it, I stayed proud of myself for never picking up the hateful habit.”

Sheen said the 15-hour flight was the “last time” he flew “anywhere as a nonsmoker.”

Ping-Pong With O.J. Simpson

When Sheen was 11 years old he played Ping-Pong against Simpson on a film set — and had some wild things to say about the late football player.

“Please understand that I’m still describing his ping-pong skills when I say: His right hand was f***ing lethal,” Sheen recalled.

The Johnny Depp of It All

Depp and Sheen formed a fast friendship before they even started filming Platoon, especially after their 15-hour flight to the Philippines “turned into a soggy airborne frat party,” thanks to the two young actors.

“As thrilled as I was to embrace a solid new friend, I made the mistake of trying to match Johnny booze-wise,” Sheen wrote. “That handsome f***er drank me under the tray table.”

There was “never” a shortage of cigarettes on the film’s set thanks to Depp, and Sheen “began to accept them less cautiously,” especially because his character also smoked. Deep was full of “strange glee” once he noticed that Sheen had picked up the habit.

“He had successfully converted one nonsmoker on each of his previous three films,” Sheen explained. “When I finally quit smoking on the Fourth of July in 2019, I did the math and figured out that I had smoked twenty-five miles of cigarettes when lined up tip-to-butt. Thanks, Johnny; should I ever need one, I’ll send you the bill for my new lung.”

Elsewhere in the book, Sheen revealed that he spent $400 on cigarettes every month when “trying to cut down” on smoking.

Alan Ruck’s Claim About Bill Clinton

Sheen took his girlfriend at the time, a woman named Dolly, to meet then-Governor Bill Clinton with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off costar Ruck.

“I was answering a reporter’s questions when Ruck overheard Clinton whisper to one of his aides: ‘Find out what you can about the brunette,’” Sheen claimed in the book. “The brunette was Dolly, and to this day Alan swears it was an exact quote.”

When Ruck told Dolly, she “laughed and was actually flattered,” Sheen wrote.

His Star-Studded Intervention

Aside from Sheen’s father and brother, stars Rob Lowe and Clint Eastwood (via phone) appeared at his first intervention.

Eastwood apparently said that Sheen was experiencing “a minor speed bump” before he was hauled off to rehab.

A Bikini Contest With Nicolas Cage

The day of his intervention, Sheen apparently had “big plans” with Cage in Palm Springs. The duo were set to judge a bikini contest. Naturally, Cage and his buddies broke Sheen out of rehab (with the promise he would return) so they could fulfill their duties.

Befriending Chuck Lorre

Sheen and Lorre, who created Two and a Half Men, “got along great” on the show.

“Pains me to think about the future s*** we could’ve done together had I not launched myself to Mars — literally,” Sheen wrote, referencing his 2011 firing from the sitcom.

The Matthew Perry Connection

Perry “hosted a private men’s group at his condo” and Sheen attended, starting their friendship. Sheen remembered the late Perry fondly in his book.

“I was fascinated by Matt’s ability to turn every frown upside down. I’ve never met anyone who more masterfully used humor as a deflector shield to keep you just enough over there,” Sheen wrote. “I dug every minute we spent together and over there with Matthew was much better than most people’s front and center.”

Sheen was even at a party with Perry when he met third wife Brooke Mueller.
