Roger Howarth is proving that all is fair in love and soap operas by crossing over to The Young and the Restless after being on General Hospital for decades.
News broke on Thursday, August 28, that Howarth, 56, is returning to CBS for a mystery role on The Young and the Restless beginning this fall. According to Deadline, Howarth will start shooting in September and his debut will follow later this year.
The details surrounding who Howarth is playing on the soap opera have not been publicly revealed, but the actor teased his return to the genre via Instagram.
“Excited and appreciative … I’m a lucky guy …,” Howarth wrote on Thursday. He shared a mirror selfie, in which he crossed his fingers and added a “Y” and an “R” to the image.
While Howarth has been flying under the radar since 2023 following his exit from General Hospital, he has a long history in the soap world.
The actor got his start on One Life to Live in 1993 playing Todd Manning. He appeared on the series on and off from 1993 to 2013.
Howarth made an even bigger splash in 2001 when he began portraying Paul Ryan on As the World Turns. He starred on more than 700 episodes of the CBS soap opera between 2001 and 2010.
His most recent TV stint was playing Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt on General Hospital from 2012 to 2023. During his run on the ABC series, he appeared in more than 900 episodes, which made his departure even more surprising.
Howarth’s character was written off the show in fall 2203 when Austin was fatally shot.
At the time, Howarth confirmed his departure by sharing “three things that I know for sure” via an Instagram post.
“1 Daytime fans are lovely and amazing and supportive and dedicated, and I am deeply grateful to each sparkly one of them,” he shared alongside a shadow picture in his yard. “2 I enjoyed my time at general hospital and wish the cast and crew the best and continued success. It was a pleasure working with you all.”
Howarth added: “3 Life is amazing. We just don’t Ever know what’s gonna happen. How great! Turn toward the light. Always. Huge thank you to you all.”
Over the next year, Howarth gave fans an inside look at his home life, spending time with family and working on music.
While Howard hasn’t been in front of the camera since his General Hospital exit, he has been working on a few soap opera related projects.
He announced on Thursday that he is reuniting with Kassie DePavia, who played Blair Cramer on One Life to Live, for a Zoom event next month. The former costars are also doing a meet-and-greet event in November in New Jersey and a private dinner with fans in Staten Island, New York.
The Young and the Restless airs on CBS weekdays.
