Dax Shepard is still thinking about that rumor regarding his and wife Kristen Bell’s sex life.
Shepard, 50, discussed the infamous online claim during a conversation about tabloid headlines with guest Jennifer Aniston on the Monday, October 20, episode of his “Armchair Expert” podcast.
“There was a tabloid story about Kristen and I that we were swingers. And I don’t think people even remember that we were swingers,” the Zathura actor said, to which Aniston, 56, jokingly asked, “That’s not true?”
“It’s not true. And we could perhaps, under the right circumstance, you know, have a very open dialogue about that, if the right participants presented themselves,” Shepard joked.
Shepard and Bell, 45, have addressed the rumor about their marriage in the past. During an August 2023 episode of the podcast, the couple brought up the tabloid story while discussing odd headlines they’ve read about themselves.
“There was one that said we hosted orgies or swingers parties,” Shepard said at the time.
Bell revealed that she knew “exactly” where the rumor began.
“It’s because you frequently make key party jokes,” she explained. “We’ll have a dinner party or something, and as we’re sitting down, you’ll say, ‘Everybody leave your keys.’”
Shepard admitted that he did often joke with guests on his podcast before realizing that they “do not have the same sense of humor” as him.
“I was like, ‘Hey, if you guys are ever in L.A. and you wanna swing,’” he said.
Bell agreed that many people didn’t get their sense of humor.
“A lot of people don’t get jokes,” she continued. “That’s actually something I have been thinking about lately, because it’s such a bummer that everything you say has to be taken so literally that there’s no room for fun in expression or language anymore when you’re telling a story, because you better have the facts right. It’s just such a lame way to communicate.”
Shepard later brought up the swingers rumor again during a September 2024 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.
“There was the most exciting tabloid story that we were Hollywood swingers and we hosted swing parties,” he said at the time, adding that his “favorite part” about the rumor was getting text from his famous friends about these alleged parties.
“We got a lot of texts from other friends of ours saying, ‘How could you not have invited me to the swinger party?’” he joked. “I mean, they were teasing, of course, because they know us and they know we’re not hosting swinger parties.”
“To receive a text from [Jimmy] Kimmel saying, ‘My feelings are quite hurt that [Kimmel’s wife] Molly [McNeary] and I weren’t invited to the swingers party,’ was very funny,” Shepard continued.
While Shepard said there are “a lot of hot couples out there,” he confirmed that he and Bell have “not crossed that divide with anyone.”
Shepard and Bell got engaged in 2009 and tied the knot in 2013. They welcomed daughters Lincoln and Delta in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
