The story of Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas has had some unexpected twists and turns.
The duo’s messy split made headlines in October 2008. Swift later revealed that Jonas broke up with her during a 27-second phone call after three months of dating. She went on to pour her feelings about the Jonas Brothers musician into song, including the Fearless track “Forever and Always” and the Speak Now tune “Better Than Revenge.”
While it once seemed like there was too much bad blood between the exes for them to ever bury the hatchet, Swift and Jonas famously went on a double date with their then-partners Calvin Harris and Gigi Hadid — oh, and Karlie Kloss tagging along as a fifth wheel — in 2015.

Jonas dumped Swift over the phone with a 27-second call in October 2008. The Grammy winner confirmed the breakup details while appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres Show the following month, saying, "It's all right – I'm cool.” She continued: "You know what, it's like, when I find that person that is right for me, he'll be wonderful. When I look at that person, I'm not even going to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18.” Swift said that after she hung up she checked to see how long the call really was, adding, "I looked at the call long — it was like 27 seconds. That's got to be a record."
The Jonas Brothers member responded to Swift’s remarks via his MySpace page at the time. “Any time you are in a relationship for any length of time, there are going to be issues. Sometimes they resolve; other times they lead to a change of heart. This was the case recently,” the blog read. “Maybe there were reasons for a breakup. Maybe the heart moved on. Perhaps feelings changed. I am truly saddened that anything would potentially cause [the fans] to think less of me.”
The “Lover” singer released “Forever and Always” from her Fearless album in November 2008, which she revealed was written about the heartbreak. "Was I out of line? / Did I say something way too honest, made you run and hide/ Like a scared little boy,” she sings at one point.
Swift spoke to Us exclusively about the split the same month, revealing that Jonas’ relationship with Camilla Belle was the reason behind their separation. “They’ve been together since we broke up,” she explained. “That’s why we broke up — because he met her.” The country singer turned pop star also penned “Better Than Revenge,” which seemingly addressed Jonas’ rebound relationship.
The Arizona native dropped “Much Better” in June 2009 with the Jonas Brothers, which some fans think is a diss track about Swift, since it references her hit song, “Teardrops on My Guitar” at one point. “I get a rep for breakin' hearts / Now I'm done with superstars / And all the tears on her guitar / I'm not bitter / But now I see / Everything I'd ever need / Is the girl in front of me / She's much better,” the trio sings to kick off the track.
“You might think I’d bring up Joe, that guy who broke up with me on the phone. But I’m not going to mention him in my monologue song,” Swift sang as part of her opening Saturday Night Live monologue in November 2009. “Hey Joe! I’m doing real well and I’m hosting SNL — but I’m not going to write about that in my monologue song.”
After Jonas was spotted hanging out with Swift at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards, the Camp Rock actor told Access Hollywood, "I think we're friends” after years of ups and downs. "In this industry you meet a lot of people and you stay in touch,” he said in May. “Obviously, it's tough to be friends with people that you're always constantly traveling but yeah, we're cool."
The Miss Americana star reflected on the “most rebellious thing" she did as a teenager while visiting The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May 2019, pointing to her fallout with Jonas. “Probably when I, like, put Joe Jonas on blast on your show,” she replied. “That was too much. That was too much. I was 18. Yeah. We laugh about it now, but … that was mouthy. Just some teenage stuff there.”
After seeing that Swift showed regret for the way she handled their breakup, Jonas spoke out about his current status with the “Bad Blood” singer while on Lorraine in June 2019. “Yeah, I mean, it did feel nice,” the “Cake By the Ocean” crooner said. “It’s something that I probably was feeling bad about when I was younger, but at the end of the day, I’ve moved on and I’m sure Taylor’s moved on and it feels nice. We’re all friends and it’s all good.”
Fans are convinced that the Pennsylvania native sent a baby gift to Jonas and his wife, Sophie Turner, after they welcomed their first child in July 2020. In Swift’s song “Invisible Strings,” which was released the same month, as part of her Folklore album, she sings about a mystery gift and former flame that received it. “Cold was the steel of my axe to grind / For the boys who broke my heart / Now I send their babies presents,” she reveals.
Swift dropped a song from her vault in April 2021, titled, “Mr. Perfectly Fine” and many fans believe it was written in 2008 about her famous flame. “But that was when I got to know Mr. ‘Change of heart,’ ‘Mr. Leaves me all alone,’ I fall apart / It takes everything in me just to get up each day / But it’s wonderful to see that you’re okay,” she sings in one verse. Swifties were quick to point out that “change of heart” could be referencing Jonas, since he used that phrase to reference their split. Many pointed to the lyrics, “Sometimes they resolve, other times they lead to a change of heart; this was the case recently,” as proof that it is about Jonas who is now friends with his ex. The track is set to appear on the re-recorded Fearless album, which will be released later this year.
Jonas’ wife reacted to Swift’s “Mr. Perfectly Fine” release in April 2021, giving it her stamp of approval after many fans speculated it was written about the musician’s famous breakup with Swift. “It’s not NOT a bop @TaylorSwift,” the Game of Thrones alum wrote via her Instagram Stories. The “Love Story” singer replied by reposting the Story and adding, “Forever bending the knee for the [queen] of the north.”
The "Remember This" singer was spotted supporting Swift at an after party the same night she debuted the 10-minute version of "All Too Well" on Saturday Night Live. Turner also raved over the updated song, teasing in an Instagram Story at the time that she wasn't "fine at all" alongside the Red album cover.
After initially changing the lyrics to “Much Better” during a June 2022 performance, TikTok went wild when Jonas sang the new version again during a show in New York City.
“Now I’m cool with superstars / and the teardrops on her guitar,” he sang, tweaking the lyrics from “done with superstars” to “cool with superstars.”
Jonas opened up about fans' response to his messy 2008 split from the "Karma" singer during an interview on the "Armchair Expert" podcast. "I hope to think they like me," he said. "No one f--ks with the Swifties, you know?"
While he noted that he and Swift are "cool" now, the "Waffle House" crooner confessed that her fans were initially "mad" at him following the pair's breakup. "But it's been many, many years removed," he added.
Shortly after Jonas filed for divorce from Turner, Swift was seen hanging out with Turner in NYC twice in one week. Photos of the two women hugging and strolling arm in arm went viral, as Swifties couldn’t help but notice a connection to a lyric from the songwriter’s 2022 song “Vigilante S—t”: “Picture me thick as thieves with your ex-wife.”
During an Eras Tour concert in Toronto, Swift sent fans into a frenzy with a mashup of "Mr. Perfectly Fine" from Fearless (Taylor's Version) and "Better Than Revenge" from Speak Now — both of which were inspired by her relationship with Jonas.
"Time for a little revenge," she teased on stage, per social media footage.
Jonas weighed in on Swift's album The Life of a Showgirl during an interview with Esquire. "I've heard some of it," he said. "I think she's obviously the biggest artist out there, and I think it's good. Everybody's got an opinion about it, but from what I've heard, there are some catchy melodies."
Among those opinions is speculation that Swift's title track — a collab with Sabrina Carpenter — sounds like the Jonas Brothers hit "Cool." Jonas didn't address the chatter directly.
