Voice of Cowardly Lion Revealed Ahead of 'Wicked: For Good' Release

The Cowardly Lion made an appearance in the Wicked: For Good trailer, but the character’s identity was hinted at in the first film.

Fans were introduced to the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. The character, who was famously portrayed by Bert Lahr in the 1939 classic, meets Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) as she’s walking down the yellow brick road. Already accompanied by the Scarecrow and Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion joins the group as they seek out the Wizard.

Wicked, which is based on a book and Broadway show, is essentially a prequel to The Wizard of Oz as it tells the backstory of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West), Glinda (the Good Witch) and others before Dorothy’s arrival in Oz.

Dorothy and her pals make a brief cameo in the first Wicked film. In the trailer for the sequel, which dropped in September 2025, the characters can be seen approaching the Wizard searching for help to get Dorothy back home to Kansas.

When first meeting Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, the Cowardly Lion’s first instinct was to attack. However, after speaking to the group, he confessed that he was fearful and seeking to be courageous. Dorothy invited him along to meet the Wizard.

Who Voices the Cowardly Lion in ‘Wicked: For Good’?

Wicked announced the voice of the Cowardly Lion as Colman Domingo on October 20, 2025. The film’s official Instagram account shared the news by sharing a video of Domingo holding a Cowardly Lion Squishmallow in front of his face before pulling it down to reveal his identity, saying with a wink, “See you in Oz.”

Days before the reveal, Wicked director John M. Chu teased that he had sent a DM to a notable actor about reading lines for the role in For Good.

“I was like, ‘It’s not a ton of lines, but maybe you have a little time. I know you’re busy. I’ll come to you,’” Chu told Deadline on October 16, taking care not to reveal the actor’s name. “He was like, ‘Why the f*** not, let’s go!’ And then we went ahead and recorded the lines.”

He continued, “Man, wait until the red carpet when the actor who gave us the Cowardly Lion’s voice steps foot on it. It’ll be wild.”
